Default Victorian Mourning

We've had a lot of events over the past few years that folks have worn their mourning attire to; whether it be a museum gala opening, a day at a SASS event, or even the unfortunate necessity to wear one to a memorial service. I know that out all of my dresses that I have made, next to my saloon outfits, my Merry Widow's dress has gotten the most use. My dress is very much a 'tongue in cheek' version of the more traditional mourning attires, but that is part of the beauty of SASS------its a fantasy sport and costumes are a big part of that fantasy. Several of us "old timers" have discussed mourning attire and the practices involved with it over the years, but we have a lot of new people here now that may like to hear about it as well. Not to mention that October is only 4 months away and a lot of clubs have Halloween themed shoots or other events during that month. What a blast to wear a mourning outfit to one of them!

This is the link to my Merry Widow outfit and all that was involved in making it. http://carolinabelles.net/vb/showthr...ht=merry+widow I know that a lot of ladies out there have some wonderful mourning goodies, like Widow's Weeds and her spider watch (that I am so green over). Please feel free to add whatever you want and post questions. This should be fun for all of us!

Several months ago I bought the coolest 1880's bonnet/hat on ebay that keeps calling to me to make a mourning ensemble to go along with it. I just might have to follow through with that. Nothing like buying an accesorie to get an outfit started!

BTW, I love that third picture! What a hoot!

Some brooches have simple locks of hair, braided or not, and some have sentiments written around the outside of the keepsake.

Black jewelry was note worthy, especial Whitby jet or guta percha (?sp)------some of it is just breathtaking. And this was mourning jewelry? Well, it makes me cry when I see it cause I sure wish I could afford it! It came in every size shape and form...........rings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, hair combs........
