Ok i just love old pics.. This is my Pa(grandfather on my mums side) he was a very good bike rider for back then. The area in which he was born and lived all his life has a memorial bike ride for him each year. My nan goes and gives out the winning trophy.
I also have a cousin on my mums side who is a junior world road cycling champion, he has won my grandpas race also, so it was pretty neat.
Plus its shows you how small a world it is, a man i work with is a bike rider from the same area, and he was telling me one day about the ride, he didnt beleive me when i told him it was my grandpa...he went on then to say his brother had won the race one year. Its an 80km road race.

Hello,
Here is a photo of my grandmother, Mary Belle, in 1905 at age 18 in So. Illinois.
After my grandfather died, she earned a living as a seamstress. Everyone loved her, even my grumpy grandmother on the other side of the family.
My mother always told me I "took after" Grandma Mary. That is an honor.
Regards,

My sweet mother-in-law came to visit this weekend and she let me dress her up. She said she was my Barbie.
It all started because she wanted an outfit for Heritage Days at her church. Blue is her favorite color. I have one blue dress that would be appropriate for church.
The church was founded in 1908 and I just happened to have a Past Patterns 1904 costume. Frugal people wore their clothes for several years. So, she thought it would be perfect.
So, here she is.
Allie Mo

She liked that dress so well that she thought she might like to wear a Victorian dress on her next cruise. She's going to Alaska next summer.
Since I didn't have any more blue, she thought lavender might work.

She thought it might be fun to have a VBS for the cruise too. It looks better on her than me. Blue is a great color for silver hair.

:ty all for the kind words.
I am going put a new waist band on the blue so it is more comfortable for her. She can have it, as it is too short for me.
It is acetate and cotton faille. Beware, some cleaners can shrink that fabric. All four of my skirts made out of it shrunk. I added a ruffle to two of them after the first cleaning. One, I made a black pleat bottom slip to wear under. Unfortunately, this one has big pleats and I'm not sure what to do with it. I have only a tinsy amount of fabric left, which I need to use for the new waistband.
I've been trying to get her to get a PC for years, as have the grandchildren. I think it ain't gonna happen.

He's a Life member Tombstone Vigilante, Range Master and a Member of the Civil Air Patrol. Tim and I "adopted" him as he has no family nearby. We all go riding, shooting and fly his plane together.

This one hasn't been up in awhile:faint
I have an addition here, a grandson that we thought was lost to us. He was given up by his mother at 6 months old while his Dad was a guest of the state of Idaho. Dad got his life straight in the mean time, was asked to give up his rights as well, didn't do it. Seems the people that had him decided he was a "problem". Court system where he's at found Dan , but the " foster parents" said they couldn't. We finally got to see him on Saturday, seems all the crap on the court papers don't jive with what we found during our visit. Dan is in the process of getting him back, hopefully sometime in March. It's quite a tangled mess involving the boy being named something other than his legal name, believe they were trying to hide him from Dan. I personally think this was one of those " wink, wink" under the table deals between the family that had him and the mother's family.
Anyway, here's my Grandson Yuri, my son Dan, and Susie during Saturday's visitation. First we've seen him since he was 6 months old. The lady on the desk said the look on the boy's face was priceless when he saw his real Dad for the first time............Buck

Your son has a long road to hoe....since he's missed so much of his life. My daughter and her hubbie have custody of his oldest daughter after her mom got into trouble with drugs in Kansas. They've had Keilea for 4 years now...she just turned 8 and they are constantly having to deal with issues provoked by her time spent with a drug addict for a mom. She's such a sweet little girl....but has a bad view on how to treat infants and small children. Kate has to constantly watch her with the littlier kids. She understands it's probably due to how she was talked to and treated...but it's still hard to watch and see. You hopw they will learn differently by seeing how it is now....but it doesn't always sink in.

Aspen, Dan's aware of this. His wife now, works at Cleveland Clinic and they've already been checking into Psy care there just in case. It's got a pretty good reputation in that field. He seemed fairly normal on the first visit, and Dan's been talking to him on the phone almost every day. He hasn't had any trouble at the foster home he's currently in. No problems at school and is carrying a fairly high grade average. We'll see during readjustment if things go well at court................Buck:beg

Joshua Reynolds was born into the family of the Reverend Samuel Reynolds, who held the post of headmaster in a local grammar school, which Joshua attended as a boy. The young Reynolds received a good classical education; he loved literature and became well-read in classical Greek and Roman authors. He revealed his interest in and talent for painting rather early.
In 1740 he went to London to study painting. He was not interested in portraiture and had no intention to work in this genre. However, apprenticeship in the studio of Thomas Hudson (1701-1779), a Devonshireman like himself and a famous portrait painter of that time, changed Reynolds’ mind. He spent 3 years in Hudson’s studio and even before finishing his studies, began his career as a portrait painter. His early independent Devon works reveal his inexperience and lack of individual style. In 1744 Reynolds returned to London for another two years, during which he evidently studied the available works of old masters. Thus, his Self-Portrait (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds230.html) of 1747 (London, Portrait Gallery) was influenced by Rembrandt and the famous group portrait of the Eliot Family (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds14.html) shows that he had studied the large-scale portrait of the Pembroke Family (http://www.abcgallery.com/V/vandyck/vandyck35.html) (1634-35) by the Flemish Baroque painter Sir Anthony Van Dyck (http://www.abcgallery.com/V/vandyck/vandyck.html).
However modest the early works might have been, they revealed the compositional talent of the young painter and his interest in light and theatrical effects.
In 1753, Reynolds settled in London. He became popular very quickly. The Portrait of Captain Keppel (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds31.html) (1753-54, Greenwich, National Marine Museum), on whose ship he had left to Italy, brought him his first success. By 1760, he had become the most popular portrait painter in London. His works were valued twice as much as those of Gainsborough (http://www.abcgallery.com/G/gainsborough/gainsborough.html).
Undoubtedly, Reynolds was artistically talented and a master of the brush, but he also possessed another gift -- a gift for selling -- and in the 1750s-60s he ran what we would today call a highly successful marketing campaign. Watching painters at work was a kind of entertainment at the time, and Reynolds made a performance out of his work. He had a large mirror in his studio, which he placed so that a sitter could observe the progress of the painting; he never sat when painting, but was in perpetual motion, and, being well-read and well-mannered, he engaged his sitters in polite and clever conversation. He forged prestigious social contacts, and had among his friends such literary celebrities as Samuel Johnson (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynoldsbio.html#SamuelJohnson) (1709-84), Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), the statesman, author, orator and political philosopher Edmund Burke (1729-1797), the actor and theatrical manager David Garrick (1717-1779) and others. Thanks to his activities and success with the public, Reynolds managed to raise the social status of the painter in Britain and made the profession as prestigious as that of scientist and philosopher. Among his models were aristocrats and the gentry, state and political figures, military men, poets and writers, actors and scientists, upper-class ladies and women of questionable reputation. Having a lot of commissions, Reynolds produced more than 100 paintings a year. Naturally, to keep up such an output, he had to hire several assistants. The employment of drapery and landscape painters for adding backgrounds to portraits was a normal practice in England at the time. Besides, Reynolds’ studio assistants often produced copies of portraits for relatives and friends of the sitter. It was not uncommon for Reynolds to paint the face and hands, leaving the rest of the picture to be completed by his assistants. It usually took several sessions as long as one hour each to finish the face, while the rest of the picture was completed without “troubling” the client. In the 1760s Reynolds was one of the founding members of the Society of Artists. In 1760 the Society of Artists organized the first public exhibition of contemporary artists, which had tremendous success, and afterwards such exhibitions were held yearly. Reynolds participated in them throughout his life. The Society of Artists sought the patronage of the King, and in 1768 the Royal Academy was founded with Reynolds as its first president. In 1769 he was knighted by George III and for the next 20 years his authority in art was indisputable.
The Series of Discourses that he, as the President, delivered annually to students of the Royal Academy between the years 1769 and 1790 were published after his death. The ideas expressed in these speeches had been developing since the Renaissance, but collected together they became a classical expression of the academic doctrine of Grand Manner. Rational in its basis, it opposed Romanticism with its emphasis on feelings and emotions. Reynolds considered that after Michelangelo (http://www.abcgallery.com/M/michelangelo/michelangelo.html), art had gradually degraded. While he did not reject the individual manner of each painter, he thought that the standard should be the great works of the old masters, especially those of the Renaissance. The Discourses became the basis for academic art education. In practice, the art of Reynolds himself was far from his own doctrine. His work is characteristic of a rare artistic variety combining the dignity and greatness of Grand Manner with feelings, fine psychological observations and artistic freedom. There are not many artists in history who were able to render such an exceptional combination of emotions and technique. His works can be divided into two types. The first is where he struggled to “elevate” the genre of portraiture with the help of classic samples and associations. Such compositions are pompous and contain allegoric figures and details, taken from classical mythology and art. The models in these works are idealized and very often the subjects are Greek and Roman deities. Three Graces, Decorating Gimenei; Portrait of the Montgomery Sisters 1774, Tate Gallery, Portrait of Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds198.html) (1783-84), are the best examples of this line of his art. The other type of portraiture – he usually painted people he knew well in this style – is intimate, without spectacular attributes, and psychologically subtle. . Examples of this portraiture include,… Portrait of Nelli O’Brien (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds97.html) (Wallace collection) – considered one of his masterpieces. Reynolds built the composition of his works very creatively, showing much diversity and originality in his treatment of his models. In 1781 the painter visited Holland and Flanders, and was impressed by the works of Rubens. The influence of the great master can be seen in his portrait of the Duchess of Devonshire and Her Daughter (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds66.html) (1786), in his pictures commissioned by Catherine II and Prince Potemkin Infant Hercules Strangling Serpents in His Cradle (http://www.abcgallery.com/R/reynolds/reynolds233.html) (Hermitage).
In 1784 Reynolds was appointed the court painter of King George III, though they never had close relations because of Reynolds’ political views and support for the Whig party. Reynolds’ royal portraits are not among his best works. During his latest years he also tried himself in historical paintings, unconnected with classical subjects (e.g. Macbeth and the Witches, Lord Egremont collection) Three years before his death Reynolds became blind and had to stop his work. He was buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral with honors as a man of national fame in Britain. A bronze statue of him by Alfred Drury, was placed in the courtyard in front of the Royal Academy in 1912

1) my great grandparents in 1897 (tucked in blouse with belt...tiny waist),
2) my grandparents in 1921 (veil looks like a night cap...tiny waist)
3) and my parents in 1945 (shoulder pads to the max...tiny waist).
Great wedding dresses!
The fourth picture is my niece. She married in 2005 and her veil is the same veil that my mother (her grandmother) wore in 1945, with the head piece removed and the edges bound. She has a BUSTLE and tiny waist too...and was Miss San Diego in the Miss California contest for Miss America. I'm kinda the "proud aunt".

Now for a few more ...Top left is my Dad in 1942 or 43 , I'm not sure, he was just a pup, then Dad and Mom, the year was 1949, Just married, And then Mom in 1955, followed by Mom's parents, Winfrey Garlock and Minnie Riedel Garlock, I think they were about 22 at the time. And Winfrey's Mom, My Great Grandma, you saw her before, this photo, dates 1884, She was 18 at the time.

Wimpy....you are toooo funny!
Looking at my family pictures of pre 1800 and yours....I wonder if anyone back then was happy. They had to sit so long, so still and holding a smile was just not possible I guess. They're all so serious. It's almost scary!

Four-Eyed Buck....she is beautiful! Isn't it amazing....children born in 2008! Can you imagine what she'll experience between now and 2108?
I'm so envious of children today and what they'll experience in the next hundred years. She has a gleam in her eye that says, "Hello World! Here I Am! Bring it on cause I'm loving life!"
I wish her much happiness and success in her years here on Earth.....God, she's adorable!

Haven't got to meet her in person yet, Miz Mo. Sometimes family things can be a bit twisted and weird. This is the son I don't hear from or see much of. Last time I heard from them was when Chloe was born. There was a picture of all three together, but I haven't figured out how to separate them as they were sent all together in one E-Mule...........Buck:faint:tap:beg

Somewhere we only have pictures up to WW1. Somebody pinched the pictures of my Mom's Grandmother that were to come to me and I KNOW who pinched the ones of my Dad's great grands. :tap They were to be mine also. She pinched everything from my Grandmother. She made out Grandma's will and the only thing she left my Dad was hurt feelings.

I've only just seen this thread and its completely marvelous!! My sister and I sat down a couple of weeks ago and went through our family photos. I have a whole batch to copy which I will share with you when I've done that. Unfortunately dates and details for them are few an far between. Thats as a result of my families lack of communication!!
Thanks for sharing all your photos!

Don't feel alone, Tiffers. Except for me and my oldest cousin, there aren't too many pics or family info available to us. My youngest son did some family tree work years ago and did give us some stuff to work with. I might have located my great grandfather's resting place, but will have to wait until I can travel there to confirm it. Still having extreme problems locating the Virginia end of the family's story as the town/village name doesn't appear on any maps of the county that I've been able to access. We think the government took over the land it was on for an emergency landing field right before WW II. Last mention of the VA end was in 1911 for the burial of my great uncle........Buck:faint:go

OMG! Now I know I am old!! Here is our eldest grandson, who is graduating high school in two weeks, and his fiancee! They hope to marry this summer AND attend college. We wish them well, it's a hard road ahead.
We will head down to Austin for graduation and to show our love and support for these two youngsters - and our daughter, Stephen's mom!

This is a photo of my Great Granddad Sullivan Maxwell in his later years, with a team harnessed up and ready for the day's work.
His father William was the young lad who drew a bead on General John Hunt Morgan when said good worthy paused on his way East through the Sunday Creek Valley.
Picture taken on the Maxwell farm which is still in the family, Perry County, Ohio, unfortunately no date on the photo.
The second photo is Great-Granddad Sullivan in his younger years.
Fine looking fellow he was!
Cousin Sally from Texas brought a peck basket of pictures she'd recovered from her late mother's house and at Reunion had them spread out on a picnic table ... we had family three deep bent over one another looking at those pictures and with much effort and nearly the entire day we identified most of them.

Two more pictures from Cousin Sally's peck basket:
The first is Sullivan's wife Rose and her sister, whose name unfortunately escapes us.
The second is my Granddad as a young man, and his oldest daughter, my dear Mama.
He was a fine looking man just like his Pappy, and my dear Mama still has that lovely curly hair!
