Thanks Nellie! That is exactly how the cutters at Mary Jo's cut fabric. The first time I ever saw one of them do that was the first time I purchased $18/yard velvet and as soon as I saw her start to rip it and heard the tear I almost fainted!!! I must have made an audible gasp because she looked up at me and said, "Sweetie, it's okay, this is the best way to make sure the grain is even." I have learned a lot from the staff at Mary Jo's over the years, they are great!

Good instructions.

If it doesn't tear easily, then I (pull) a thread.

I don't like to rip because it can pull your fabric out of shape. I pick out a thread and pull it across the fabric and then cut on that line to get the straight grain. And then I pin the selvages together and pin the cut edge together. I use a cardboard "grid" like in the video and if the fabric is really squirrely I pin the fabric to the cardboard with push pins.

I learned the "pull a string and cut on the line" thing very early on in my sewing...now...I just wing it! :rofl :rofl

I have two pieces of slinky fabric for nightgowns and robes. So will try the "tear thing".

On all my sheer fabric, I always do the pull a thread thing.
