Remember when Ms. Clancy posted beautiful pictures of her home town? Well, my home town isn't that beautiful, but I thought it would be nice to share pictures now and then of where we live, I just had to share an amazing Rocky Mountain sunset as seen from the prarie.

Oh that does it!! where is my camera?!?! :w2
Now I may WHINE about the lack of decent fabric stores ( and we do have them they are just stupidly expensive!) but I happen to be living on some of THE mose exclusive shoreline in the nation and as it is federal land out beaches have no public access and are like a dream from another time...
Star fish galore and sealions watching you from about 50 feet out....
and we have lovely WORLD CLASS pea soup fog most mornings :re

Oh wow!! Beautiful pictures. I live in the So Cal desert better known as hell and the only time it is even remotely pretty here (in my opinion) is around March/April after some rain when all the desert is blooming. Then, it is very different but it doesn't last long. :re

I'll get you a photo of our current house (the one we are moving from when we get the new one built) at a later time.

Well,
To the left of centre is a farmhouse that I live in.
The house on the right at the bottom is my parents (all them gardens), and the house to the lowr left is where my sister lives.
This pitcher is fairly old and the dairy has been rebuilt since..... but, everything is in the same places.
This is where I grew up, and the dairyfarm is still functioning.

Wallaby,
Nice layout, but what is that big green mound in the back??? Here I am in the flat land prairie of Illinois where you can see for miles and miles and only corn and beans for scenery! This is the family homestead before remodeling in '85.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/willy51/farmstead0001.jpg
We used to have a saying, come to Illinois and surf the corn!
Really tho, when you are sitting outside at night, you can hear the wind through the corn and it is relaxing. You can hear the rain coming by hearing it on the crops. Its nice to be able to see the lights from towns that are 20-30 miles away on a clear night. We talk about going somewhere else, but we were both raised here. I've lived in Denver, Kentucky, California and I keep coming home.
I am envious of some of the scenery you all wake up to tho! It is breathtaking.

Howdy Folks,
I finally got brave enough to cross the street to take a photo. The city just replaced our sidewalks and curbs, so there are no cars parked in front of the "money pit," oh er, I mean house. Seems like we just painted, replaced the steps...and they need it again. :re

Mo, I'm glad it's you guys that have to paint that, I've got a thing about ladders. Am I counting three story's or is that a raised foundation?........Buck :cgun :fm
Buck,
We hired a fellow to strip it, then Jess and I painted it. I'm not partial to heights either, so Jess had to paint the top floor and attic area by himself. It's three stories, plus an unfinished attic. The basement (or first floor) has a lower ceiling. It is where Jess has his "playroom" and we have a pool table there too. Then there are two full stories.
A lot of houses in Sacramento have the main floor at least six feet above ground because it flooded in the winter before they built the levees.
Kitty, thanks for the compliment. We both have problems with our hands and the upkeep is getting to be too much. We've lived here since 1973. So, you can imagine, we get one thing fixed or replaced and something else breaks. That's one reason that we're moving.

Allie, I know what you mean. Houses can sometimes be a money pit. You just about get one thing done and then another thing goes. We have a house that is 12 years old and I have been slowly trying to de-pink the house. The previous owners love mauve (you know 1970) and it is all over the house. Don't get me wrong I like color it is just she over did it. She had mauve floors, sinks and walls.
DogWoman
09-25-2005, 09:13 AM
Oh do I know that color overdo! Our house was built in 1972 and avacado green was big. The kitchen was carpeted in shades of green, walls green, green appliances. Then the rest of the house overflowed in GREEN!
We are getting the kitchen ripped out in November and NO MORE GREEN! The only green left is one bedroom. That will go in the not too distant future.
Allie Mo
09-25-2005, 11:31 AM
Ooh ooh DogWoman,
I don't think you'll like our new house (if it ever gets built, still no foundation). I am thinking of painting it a pale grey-green with white trim and raspberry door/accent trim.
You can't see it too well. The current house is pale blue with white, darker grey-blue, and lavendar trim. I like using a multi-color scheme. However, it is tedious to paint.
I just got rid of my last bit of avocado green. It was an electric skillet I received as a wedding present in 1971. Avocado green and harvest gold were big then. :18
Kitty, I like that term "de-pinking." I think we just get tired of excesses in color.

Allie Mo

I bought a beautiful cobalt blue shag area rug that I just fell in love with. It looked soooo cool in my living room. But then.... a day later, it had collected every little thing in my home, like a magnet, all the dog and cat hair was magically attracted to it, sticks, stones, things that I never see on my floor were all of a sudden embedded in this rug!
Okay, so I'm thinking, "I'll just have to vacuum this daily” I get out my handy dandy Dyson vacuum cleaner and "RRRRIRIRIRR” it makes the most horrible noise, I can't use that vacuum on that rug. I would have to use my old vacuum, and I would vacuum and vacuum and still there would be %$^)## in my not so beautiful now shag area rug.
I now understand why shag didn't last and it won't last this time around either. That area rug got ripped up off my living room floor, beaten hosed off (images of Velvet glove hosing down her beautiful gowns running through my head) dried, rolled and tossed in the basement.
Friends don't let friends buy shag carpet. Please let this be a public service announcement to anyone thinking thoughts of shag carpet.

Those who don't learn from history must repeat it.
Way back in the Dark Ages, our first apartment had olive green shag carpet. And of course, since we were renting, there wasn't a thing we could do about it. However, my little sister was kind enough to give us a "carpet rake" which saved my sanity.

Hello,
Thanks Clancy.
I was too embarassed or whatever to mention this before...my first apartment had charcoal grey shag in the bedroom (1970). I tore it out and found linoleum. The manager said "what are you doing" when I carried the rug to the dumpster. I told him I was getting rid of the carpet. He said he'd have to keep my cleaning deposit. I told him that I was cleaning the apartment. When I moved out, I got my deposit back.

My first CO - Commanding Officer on that ship I lived on had shag carpet removed from his Cabin along with a 60's looking love seat that screamed - this is the Coast Guard we go to flea markets for our furniture - cheap flea markets.
He said he lived as a 20 something through the sixties and sure as "He.." was not going to live through it again on his ship.

Gee...now I know where some of that ship furniture went. My husband's office was furnished from an old battleship somewhere. You could see the holes in the legs where it was bolted to the floor of the ship.
When he went to his home office, they asked if he needed the desk. Are you kidding???? He told them to keep it. We bought him an old desk at a garage sale and cleaned it up.
And speaking of houses....
Our kitchen is getting REMODELLED starting November 14. We are having a ball picking out cabenets, flooring, etc. On Saturday, I went through 429 pages of knobs for the cabinets. (http://myknobs.com) We are getting knobs that look like the SASS badges. I think we are carrying this Cowboy Action Shooting thing too far...

Since I just joined up here I am going through the past threads and found this one. It is nice to see where every one lives.. I have a couple of pics of my place, that I want to share. I am in the midst of re doing a lot - just repainted it on the outside - same basic colors with a little touch added here and there. And next will be to re do the landscape. Living here on the So. CA high desert, especially in Apple Valley, the water rates have gone through the roof the last few yrs. I can't afford the nice grass anymore.. So It is in the process of being replaced with drought tolerant colorful plants and shrubs. I will post a pic when it is all finished. I really think I am going to like it a lot better too...

You will like not having the grass. Nothing to MOW!
Our dogs are working on the back yard re-landscaping and we've been doing the front, tearing out heavy water loving shrubs and going to drought tolerant perenniels and smaller plants that are native.
We hope to tear out three trees this summer (or more if I have the energy!).
Nice having you on the board!

I am new to the forum also, here's some pics from the AZ/Mexico border, just outside Tombstone town.
Don't laugh, my house is named "Little Yellow House on the Prairie". I wanted a cheerfull color....
And the barn and my old pal and 25 year old endurance horse, Dot with my current workhorse Buddy.
And no Dot is not preganant, just fat and retired. That mare has 20,000 endurance miles, has done Tevis, and has a 23 mile and hour trot. :-))))

What is it like to have Christmas in the middle of summer? How can you have Santa and Rudolph and the sleigh? And the Christnmas songs of "Winter Wonderland, Frosty the Snow Man, Jingle Bells -- and not have snow???
Your place - the picture of the mountains with the house and the Eucalyptus trees - reminds me of the San Bernardino Valley area of Southern CA about 20 yrs ago!!!

Yes, it looks big, I like the brickwork. We just added a cement pad on the front of the "Little Yelow House", and will be adding an enclosed porch this summer. Here's a small view of Miller Peak on the Huachuca Mountains where we live. We are experiencing a terrible drought here, and have had one small dusting of snow, so I took a pic, just as the sun rose and touched the top.
We are at 5,000 feet and the peak is at about 9,000.

People here do a lot of christmas in July celebrations... As to hot summer christmas', we do bbq dinners, or the big thing is fresh seafood, oz has good seafood...The only drawback is you have to eat your christmas chocolate really fast...
We have santa in boardshorts and his zinc cream on his nose and hat for sun protection (slip slop slap), and he gets around in a sleigh pulled by boomers (kangaroos) not reindeers
and her is the aussie version of jingle bells
Dashing through the bush,
in a rusty Holden Ute,
Kicking up the dust,
esky in the boot,
Kelpie by my side,
singing Christmas songs,
It's Summer time and I am in
my singlet, shorts and thongs
Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia
on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.
Engine's getting hot;
we dodge the kangaroos,
The swaggie climbs aboard,
he is welcome too.
All the family's there,
sitting by the pool,
Christmas Day the Aussie way,
by the barbecue.
Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia
on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.
Come the afternoon,
Grandpa has a doze,
The kids and Uncle Bruce,
are swimming in their clothes.
The time comes 'round to go,
we take the family snap,
Pack the car and all shoot through,
before the washing up.
Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia
on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.

and the translation to the song
Below is the translation from the Australian language to English.
1) Answer. Holden is a make of car, its main opposition in Australia is Ford or Toyota. See below. Ute is an abbreviation of utility. The ute is usually based on the current model car and is thus about the size of a car and not usually as large as what Americans call a "pick up truck" so "dashing through the bush in a rusty Ford pick up truck" is a translation. Pronunciation Holden - hold den. Ute to rhyme with boot.(boot is the trunk)
2)Singlet -wife beater, thongs- flip flops
3) Answer. An esky is a portable cooler to keep your drink and food cool. Say 18 inches long by 12 wide by 15 height. A clip on lid and a handle, we put ice in them to do the cooling. Very well insulated,
3) Answer. A kelpie is an Australian breed of dog. Much like a Border Collie only a rougher coat. Traditionally trained to herd sheep and is a farmers best friend.
4) Answer. Swaggie is an abbreviation of Swagman. These were men who during the depression tramped the country side with their few possession in a swag on their back. The english translation would be similar to a tramp.
5) Answer. Don't tell me you have not, run off and left your mum to do the washing up of all the dirty dishes after a meal. Shoot through means leave suddenly. This line means load the presents into the car and leave before the washing up is done.

Why would they celebrate twice? The Aussies celebrate it the same time we do, December 25th, only it is their summertime there......

On another board we had an Aussie. I can't tell you the laughs we had over a couple years with him. We had a 'food' contest or Taste of Australia vs Taste of America.
America won. Apparently, the Aussie had difficulty with the milk covered herring. *grin*
During that time, I had the pleasure(?) of tasting vegemite and musk flavored life savers.
Never had 'em? Go to your medicine cabinet, take out the Old Spice and take a swig and you have the same flavor as a musk life saver.
Vegemite??? Take your favorite lager, let it dry in the glass, scrap out the dregs and spread it on your favorite cracker.

The first time I ate a musk lifesaver, it left my mouth so fast it put a hole in the sheet rock. My DOGS looked at it, sniffed it, and left it lay on the floor.
Now vegemite was another thing altogether. My Aussie friend said he has it on toast for breakfast. So..I decided to give it a whirl. The smell told me to use if VERY sparingly.
I tried to drag my tongue across sandpaper to get the taste off! The ONLY thing that got it out of my mouth was drinking a swig of BEER. My kids looked at me at 9:00 a.m. drinking a beer!
NO WONDER you guys like lager so early in the day!!!!
It did my heart good to see a friend send him the herring in milk sauce....
