Please give more info about the 3 petticoats you wear.

How much bulk is at the waist line? That is, are the petticoats gathered, pleated or what?

Are they all worn OVER the bustle?

What about the hem? Ruffles? Dust ruffles? Any other structure in the pettis?

What weight fabric are you using?

Do you ever wear a quilted petti?

I gotta know:waiting

Not Dru...but in the summer I wear two. One is a cotton antique it is cartridge pleated for about a 2-3 in space at the center back the rest is smooth in the waist band and gored at the top ( no darts) there is just one ruffled band at the bottom that is very gently ruffled. It is two layers an under and flat with a hem and an over flounce with eyelet lace. this goes over my combinations or bloomers.

Then I wear the TV 170 over that in the very full early 1870s view it is VERY full the ruffle at the bottom is the layer of fabric and lace like above. It is smooth about 3/4 around the waist and gathered across the back. I dont feel like it is a lot of bulk around the waist...it dosent bother me I mean to say.

Never worn a quilted one...too hot here!

Hope that helps a little Greeneyed (Bye now!) Gypsy

Whoops! Sorry have been out this morning. I wear over my corset and combinations, closest to me, a silk four gore A-line, for smoothness when walking, and I sometimes put my skirts on reversed, so I can adjust the falls in the back properly, then I just grab the whole bunch and move em to the front, the silk petticoat slides well. This one has lace ruffles all around the hem and a silk waistband and is a drawstring shut. Then I put my bustle over that, then two TV 170's in pure cotton. These I also make drawstring, and as much ruffles and lace as I can stand to put on, as this supports the skirts better. The only one I do make with the closure of skirt hooks is TV 101 as it fastens in the front. Bulk behind does not matter.:rofl
My actual waistline corsetted is 31, so I leave an extra inch for ease and the petticoats bulk and make my dresses 32.
I sort of "invented' my silk petticoat, I was not happy with all the running around I have to do, especially during skits and directing, with having my cotton petticoats binding up my legs, so I looked for material that was slippery enough to allow more movement. The first one I made was out of a silk poly blend fabric made for lining material, it was OK , but the pure silk breathes better. I have considered taffeta petticoats but I imagine they could be kind of warm...:lool
No quilted ones, it never gets cold enough here, I make my cold weather petticoats out of flannel, nice and soft and toasty!

Good Morning Dru: I was wondering if it would not be too much to ask to see a picture of you petticoats, especially the silk one. I'm getting ready to sew some underthings and just wanted to get some ideas. Thank you for all your input on this subject Lazy K and Dru. You have both been most helpful.:tban
