So I am wondering which of you ladies might have some really cool ideas on creating the bustle for your dresses. I am just not getting it for some reason....:help

Here's a thread on the Lobster Bustle (http://www.carolinabelles.net/vb/showthread.php?t=6562). That's the kind of bustle I use.

actually I meant the gathering of the skirt or over skirt. Maybe I just need to play with it more and just see what I get.....

BBB, I dress Matilda dummy in the bustle I'm going to wear and then put the skirt over it. And then I usually pull it up in the center back and then over each, uh, cheek. I've gotten so lazy, that I just use safety pins and pin the fabric in place. You can experiment til you get something you like.

well the dress is already made (actually almost done) and it's the tv 261 skirt and the tv305 overskirt. But I just haven't been able to figure out how to work the bustle in the back. I know I should be able to just follow the directions it's just not making sense.....
I would put it on my ducktape dummy but my friend that is going to help me make the stand hasn't had the time. So she is just about 4 ft tall and doesn't stand real well on her own.....

I guess I am wanting to know if it matters where I place the ties? Or if there are places that work better than others?????
What do you find that works the best......

See my post above! I rarely use the ties for actual bustling, I only use them to tie back the skirts.

BBBelle, I'm with Fannie on this one. Safety Pins work really well. (I still havnt figured out Heathers directions successfully either.) Though, Allie Mo just posted a cool way I'm going to give a try.
Like Lazy K said. (When you have your dummy) just pull up a section & pin. Keep going till you have the look you want.
I dont know if it will work for you but before I had my own duct tape dummy, I would put my bustle on backward & the skirt on backward over it, then stand in front of a mirror & pin that way. You will look silly doing it, but it worked for me in the past.

Hi BBB,
See the thread where I use snaps on the TV Polonaise. Heather has markings on her pattern where you tack the tapes on the skirt. That's where I put the loops. Her markings look like asterisks, *.
She also tells you to tack the tapes at the waist. As the tapes are shorter than the distance from the waist to the *, you end up with the fabric bustled up.
I hope this helps.

In Pretty Mean Shawme's class at the convention, she showed us how to use a quilting baster "gun" to do the bustle (just don't wear gloves while you're using the baster ;-)

Thanks for the thoughts ladies. I will give this a try as soon as I can wrap my mind around something better than work. It's been one of those weeks and I seriously think I need a job at Starbucks instead.....atleast when I get off work and go home the job stays at work....One more day like the week I've had and I think I might just tell my boss where to stick it.....but that's another story!
I hope to work on this this weekend.

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through such crap!

BBB, ssounds your boss and mine should meet!..
Mine cant access my computer he just says one thing, then does another, in other words he lies then goes and does another thing. They gave our team leader job to a new girl who is new to our dept and only been there 6 months. I have been there over 2 years in the job i do now. Seems she was threatening to leave they didnt want to lose her because its hard to get SAP people so they gave it to her to keep her there. I know have to help her do her job...
I can relate to your stress.... But you know what, take a deep breath count to 10 and remember, its only a job...
and normally when someone remotes into your computer, they have to ask first and you need to give them the access, i wasnt aware they could access it without your permission.
Hope you work out your bustleing problem...

Well the only reason I even gave my boss or I should say my direct supervisor my computer is because he is one of our repair techs for the store......see we sell MAC computers and do onsite repair and I pretty much man the selling protion of it.....
Anyway the only reason he had it was because I needed a new hard drive and he was putting it in.....I plan to ask him the next time I see him about it.....I would like to see the expression he has when I say something.....
But I too can relate to that one Clancy.....He will tell me or customers one thing and do another....and then I get the pissed off customers because he didn't do what he said he would do.....:tap So all this %&$#)!*@^( that's been going on lately has pushed me to get my photo business up and running.....I am giving myself 6 months to get things up and running....if that doesn't work then maybe I need to chase something else.....
Anyway back to the bustle.....Should I do both the underskrit and overskirt or just the overskirt???? I hope to try and work on this today....
Thanks!!!!

Ok. I give up. What's a quilting baster gun? I did a google search and folks talked about it but I couldn't find a picture.

BBB. I make almost all my dresses with trains but don't always want my dress dragging in the dust. So I bustle up the skirt in that case and the overskirt is also bustled. But then I like the BIG bustle look.

Really, there are as many ways as you can invent to "bustle" a skirt. Tapes, ties, slider rings, they all work and it just depends on what you like. I do not worry about ironing, I have all my dresses dry cleaned and those are steamed free of wrinkes. When I sew my bustles I use the twill tapes and netting (doubled) as recommended on the TV patterns, pinning them on inside out on the manniquin, then turning the skirt right side out to see the results, then I sew the tapes to the fabric strongly using quilting thread for strength. After about a half dozen dresses you pretty much know what you want, and oh don't forget to use the bustle pad/hoop, and petticoats on the manniquin when you do this, it gives you a more accurate look. One thing I have noticed about a LOT of skirts is most gals do not use enough petticoats to support the skirt, you need at least two, to support the outer skirts properly and to get the right look and drape. If it looks deflated, it IS, if it looks supported it is! Remember, the old timers wore as much as three (which I do) and more petticoats along with the other unmentionables. This gives your bustle the "pouf" and support it needs to look proper.
As far as bosses go...Lord help me I work for a Board (BOD) and there is NO satisfying them sometimes, so I just do the best I can! But I have become an expert at presentations and proposals! I know how David felt when he went into the Lion's den, believe me!

When I worked at the Western store, we used those to price tag our items. I, fortunately, have a GREAT bunch of people with whom I work. The BAD part of it is I am a TEMP! They have been trying to find a way to hire me permanently, but the higher ups are making excuses. They keep saying my job is going to go away, but, this ONE MONTH job has turned into a 3 1/2 going on 4 year thing!

Hi Ida,
That's cuz some folks "know a good thing when they see it" and others are too dense "to see the nose in front of their faces." Or, it could be a tight wad not wanting to pay for a full time employee's benefits.:tap
I hope that this employment crap works out for y'all.
BTW, I am going back to work next Tuesday. It is the same as last time, Retired Annuitant for the State. I do like things much better as a RA. My attitude is much more relaxed and I get two paychecks. How  is that! Wish me luck, I may need it.:help
