View Full Version : Triangles and Reveres

OK..I've learned so much from everyone here on the Alley I thought I'd try to contribute. Here's a step by step for decorating with triangles and reveres - my way anyway. If anyone has an easier way - please share!
I've never tried this on a polonaise so I wasn't sure how it would work. It did!!:tban :tban (If not, this thread would not exist!)
First - a simple triangle added to the back along the neck. I did not turn and hem since I was sewing lace over the edges. I don't have a serger so I just zig zagged the edges. How you finish your edges makes a difference with measurements. If you will turn under the edges, remember to add some width and length.
Measure your width for your triangle.

and measure your length -

Cut out your triangle and finish your edges. Pin in place unless your LL, then you don't need pins. :lool I use pins -

Sew your triangle in place. If you are using a decorative edging, pin it in place. If you are really good, you can pin your decorative edging and triangle together and sew in one step - I'm not that good....

Sew.... and then - Done! You will notice the lace extends to the edge of the fabric so you can sew it all into the seam for a nice finished edge.

Now to the front for some nice right triangles. Two sides will be sewn into the facing so I only finished the one side by heming -
So...we measure. Don't forget to add to your measurements for any hemming!

Cut out your triangles -

Place and check it out - Hmmmm.....I don't like the way that extends because I don't want a bunch of bulk in that corner!!

SO.....I just snipped it off!

I pinned it back on and then sewed it but there's no picture...ah well. Pin and sew just like the back triangle piece earlier.
Now....I want a revere - I believe that is what the flippy back look is called. I'm building it into the facing. Since I had already cut the facing before I decided to put in the revere, I used the existing facing as a base pattern. You will cut the top part of the facing as usual but extend the width of the bottom part of the facing for the revere. So, here we go. First fold back the fabric the width you want when finished -

and measure the base -

Measure from the neck line to determine where the revere will begin -

Now - measure out your bottom part of the facing. I doubled my base measurement so if the wind blows the bottom about, it will still look good and I'm going to sew the long triangle piece right to the fashion fabric since when you fold the revere, you won't see the line - (hope that makes sense) -

When you get done with your measurements - cut 2 - and your facing looks like this - :tban

Sew the facings onto the back neck facing as usual and then pin - pin - pin

Sew your facing. I sewed the bottom edge of the facing to the fashion fabric as well - clip - turn and press - press - press

now flip back the bottom skirt portion of the polonaise - check it out!

One more step to finish. Pin the open edge to the fashion fabric and sew. When you flip back the reveres, the sewn line will be underneath the revere. I'll be fastening the reveres back with buttons - and maybe adding some lace - haven't decided on that yet. I'll wait until the rest of the polonaise is finished to decide where to put additional trim -
That's it! The End -

Great class Chantilly... I think it is really helpful! Lots of times there are ways to think about trim DURING construction that are easier and have a very nice finished look instead of trying to figure out how to trim everything *on top* at the very end...this is a great class and concept for ladies wanting to add some design and adventure into their sewing!!!

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this class. I'm one of those, too, that tends to wait till I have the outfit finished to play with it and add trims. When I'm constructing an outfit, I need to concentrate on just getting it done right - haven't yet gotten to the place where I can multi-task and do trims at the same time, but hope that will come soon. I really like your idea of incorporating trims into the construction. I really like the fabric you're using - can't wait to see it completed. Gosh, you ladies put so much care into details - I'm loving it - and learning a wealth of information here. Thanks again!!

The polonaise with the reveres, triangles and a few prairie points on the sleeves is finished. I couldn't really get it to show well on a hanger but this is the general idea -
The ribbon on the underskirt is navy blue - it looks lighter in this picture but its as dark as the navy blue on the polonaise -
