Clancy

As mentioned earlier i said i had cut out my lobster petticoat and would put up pictures as it is being made.

I need this petticaot made before i can continue any further with my pink plaid dress. It needs the framework to help with how it all sits.

Ummmmm The bustle panels are going to probably turn out too big...dang forgot to mention that. Meaning that the ties will tie shut and there will be very little bend in the tail...I always forget I cut mine down so much the first time I did this I drafted a new piece and am so used to using it I forgot I did that....

Lazy K
05-22-2007, 05:50 PM
Thanks, GG. It's too late gor Clancy but I'm making a note on my pattern.

Do you cut down the inside flap things or make the back smaller?

Lady Fleur

Ummmm I think that one is smooth sailing (wracking my brain trying to remember....) nope nothing is comming to mind on that. I think it is all good the only issues have been addresses and either re-printed correctly or there will be a little blue note attached to your pattern with the correction...something to do with the markings on the pattern pieces.

Ok Julie just stoped by with fabric and photos and I now have a visual, pizza, sinus attack overload headache. So I have not grabbed the inside panels yet. I have a date with an advil sinus and a hot bath tub and I will go get that for you all...sorry the owie is killin me!

Thank you Gypsy, Yes there is a little blue note attached to the pattern, something about notches missing from the front edge of piece 10(side back - view C) Doesnt sound like a huge deal.

Hope your Owie gets better quickly.

This is view C that i am currently making its called a Bustle and Train. I did more last night but have not had time to put the photos up, It should be finished tonight, as all i have left is to put all the steel in. Even when and got myself new tin snips yesterday.

maisondeverneur
05-23-2007, 03:44 PM
I made the train supporter version myself to display my gowns. It's absolutely fantastic. I even tried it on myself to see how comfortable it is to sit in, and it felt absolutely fine. If I have a natural form gown I want to display, I sometimes remove the top wires so that it doesn't give quite so much of a bustle effect. Great pattern!!

Greeneyed Gypsy
05-23-2007, 06:33 PM
Oh good Clancy then forget what I said earlier...I had Lobster on the brain! LOL!!

GG

Clancy
05-23-2007, 09:05 PM
Dang, i cut down the bustle stays, will have to make new ones, although i only cut off an inch, will they still work? Good thing i hadnt put all the steel in.

Lady Fleur

Lady Fleur
05-23-2007, 09:58 PM
I know i will be making it.. hmm just need to get off my duff and order the pattern lol!!
BUT i am sire it will be at costume college and i can avoid shipping charges!!

Clancy
05-24-2007, 04:49 AM
Ok, all the steel casing is now on for both the bustle stay and the hoop stays. I used a broderie blanket binding on the bottom edge in lieu of just the plain bias, just to give it some prettiness to it.. I know you dont see it under the dress. I think the one inch bias it a little to wide, unless you stitich in further on the edges, it will make the casing a bit tighter whihc i think would look better.

Clancy
05-24-2007, 04:51 AM
Now the hoops stay has been attached and all the boning has been inserted, and the opening for the steel insertion on the bias have been sewn up. You then lace the bottom of the hoop stay so that it closes, to give it its shape.

Clancy
05-24-2007, 04:52 AM
Next you lace the bustle stay the same way you laced the hoop stay and your done!,

Clancy
05-24-2007, 04:54 AM
And now i can get back to my pink dress now that i have the framework. I guess its like building a house without frames, the walls wont stay up right!:lool

Lazy K
05-24-2007, 08:54 AM
Too cool. I'm ordering my steel today!

Questions. The pattern says to make the petticoat 3" shorter than your dress. Is that what you did?

And under what cicumstance would you wear this petticoat instead of a non-steel one? Is this more for an evening type dress or could you wear it with a day dress? You obviously couldn't wear it to a dance.

Drusilla
05-24-2007, 09:27 AM
I wear mine all the time, just depends on which dress I am using. These types are great for summer, much cooler than the bustle pads, I also have the shorter one.

Greeneyed Gypsy
05-24-2007, 10:03 AM
I dont know why you couldnt dance in it? You dont really feel it. The standard finished length is perfect of you have a 41 skirt length or longer if you are shorter than that you want to remove inches accordingly. there are places marked on the pattern to lengthen and shorten. Fluer will have to lengthen.

Borderie blanket binding? Why cant I line in a country that still knows what that is?!!? I have never seen eyelet attached to tape already I love it!

If you only took off an inch it should have been ok as you can tell!!

Its really pretty, I cant wait to watch the pretty pink plaid come to life now! :sewing :tban

Hurray!!:tban Clancy did a FANTASTIC job posting a class.

and Hurray!!:tban I dont have to do an additional class. We are doing the same pattern. But I will post a few pictures (here if no one minds)

Really great job on the bustle Clancy, you made it seam so easy! I am really getting excited about making mine this weekend. (If I ever get the silly Can-Can done....)

Clancy
05-24-2007, 03:17 PM
It is probably one of the easiest pettiocats i have made. The instructions were straight forward. I think the TV101 grand bustle is way more work than "BOB" as Fannie has named it.

BOB isnt heavy to wear, i made no adjustments at all, except when Gyps told me to cut down the pattern and realised it was another version i was making..:lalala BUt it is still ok, as i only cut off an inch, it just means my inside Bustle stay does not lace completely closed. You still get the same affect.

I think you could quite easily wear it for any occassion, i will still wear another petticoat over the top of theis, as the front of the skirt needs to be able to sit nice too.

Gyps, i dont know where i found the broderie with the blanket binding on, but i had it in my stash and thought it would be perfect for the edge, trim and make a casing all in one.

Now ladies, go forth and make LOBSTERS

I'm making my LM bustle & train today (view C) .....same as Clancy.

Well it took me 1 hour to cut out pattern, pin, mark & cut fabric.:tban

Took 1/2 hour to make little flappy things (they are boned) Grommets took 1 hour 15 minutes at least! :tap

Taking a break, my hands HURT! :snifles

:help
Can some one do a class on grommeting sometime??:beg :beg I know there has to be an easier way! (I was about ready to bring it down to the barn & use the drill press!)

Madame Olive Yew
05-26-2007, 03:32 PM
HURRAY!!! It's done!!

Not too hard either!

The whole thing took about 6 hours to do, start to finish. That included looking for shoe laces (I forgot to buy some:lalala ) I'm temporarily using boot laces:lool

Later, after a break, & after I make dinner, I'll take some pictures.

MOY You need to get yourself a grommet setter, i did mine in about 20 minutes. I got mine off Ebay and picked it up when i was in the states. Best $70.00 i spent, beats me hammering away like crazy on the chopping board in the kitchen!

Sorry we started watching Deadwood, & I lost track of time. :gg

Clancy, I've got a couple of those pliar/holepunch looking grommet setters, I inhereited from my mother, but they all work horribly. I believe they are all the cheapy ones.

Do ya'll have a brand prefference on grommet setters? How bout a brand prefference on grommets?? Thanks!

Clancy
05-27-2007, 06:50 AM
MOY this is what i have, the lady was very helpful and told me what dies i needed, after told her what i wanted to do. I also bought the dies that seat snap buttons too... No more hammering!

The only thing i found is that this will not set the grommets in the lacing bones i use in corsets. I use 00 grommets with washers, and use an awl to make your hole dont punch the hole out, if i need to hole wider i use and old chopstick because it is tapered and i can get different widths on the hole after i have started with the awl.

:faint WOW!!!:faint I never knew of such a device!! I always thought the only way to do it was with the pliar type ones. (my palm has a small bruise under the thumb from doing the 18 yesterday- well really 20 -I messed 2 up & had to re-do them) I'll be on the look out when finances at back to normal.

Thank you for posting a picture of your machine.

That's the grommet setter I have. It same sooooo much time. Definitely worth the money. I decided to get it after I made my first corset because I knew I was going to make more and would be helping friends get theirs made.

Ida Hands
05-27-2007, 07:10 PM
I know Heather of TV has this setter. Is the higher throat of any use? Do you need more room between dies? I have looked at both and am not sure. http://www.fastener-supply.com/

Iona Vaquero
07-03-2007, 09:46 PM
Where do you buy the supplies to make this? I've seen the pattern, but not the steel. Does someone sell a kit? Enquiring minds need to know.

Clancy
07-03-2007, 09:57 PM
Hi Iona

The pattern is LM (Laughing Moon), i used bleached calico for the fabric. You will need hoop steel for the cage, i purchased mine from Farthingales, im sure most corset supply places will also carry it.

You will also need i think from memory 36 grommets to lace the inside of the petticoat together and a lot of bias for the steel channels. As the fabric is not too think you should just be able to seat the grommets by hand. I have a grommet setter like the one in the pic and i set all mine in about 10 minutes, they do make life a lot easier and my husband happier for not having to listen to me hammer them in the old way.

Hope this helps.

Iona Vaquero
07-03-2007, 10:21 PM
Yep, that helps a whole bunch. I have most of the stuff since I just had to buy corset making supplies in bulk just to make one corset. I've just never seen the steel on any of the websites I've been on, which means I've never been on the Farthingales website and I didn't know what it was called. It looks like they'll be getting an order for steel on Thursday. I just have to have one of those petticoats. I don't Ona one of those yet.:lool :lool

Iona Vaquero

Iona, check out this thread where there is more discussion on this lobster plus GG suggests a few other places to get the steel. I bought mine from Hedgehog

Drusilla

I bought all my supplies from Hedgehog also, probably because the price was better for bulk buying.

Clancy

The only reason i use Farthingales is because the CAD is closer to our dollar for conversion that the USD.

Lazy K

I wore my long lobster for the first time at EOT and had a problem. The front of the lobster (at the bottom) kept getting behind my legs. It drove me nuts.
The pattern says you can use twill tape across the front of the bustle. I think I'm just going to add some tape that I can tie or buckle.

Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Greeneyed Gypsy
07-04-2007, 09:38 AM
K what do you mean it kept getting behind your legs? I am confused. The bottom of the long swooping natural form like clancy made does have a panel on the bottom that goes across.

I dont know if I am understanding what was happening.

So far mine has worked well...I am trying to think what it could be.

Lazy K
07-04-2007, 09:52 AM
GG, Look at post # 30 & 31. You see how the front edge is? When I walk, that front edge flips behind my legs. And because it has steel all the way to the front edge it gets caught behind my legs and I have to stop and flip it back in place. Does that make sense?

Lazy K
07-04-2007, 10:04 AM
Here's the final optional step in the LM pattern which I haven't seen anyone do

Madame Olive Yew
07-04-2007, 10:33 AM
Lazy K,
I havent worn my bustle out yet, but I did notice I was having the same problem (thought it might have been just me) But I was considering doing the final oprtion you mentioned.

The only thing I worry about it the basket weeve design of the tapes. I am willing to bet my boot heels get caught up in the weeve. (I walk like a man at times :lool --fast long strides) I was thinking a panel of fabric might be better for me. Just havnt worked out how to attach it. (I was thinking hook & eyes or hand stitch it in place.

Let us know how you solve it Please.

Lady Fleur

CAN't those be left behind your legs???

I JUST ORDERED THE PATTERN FOR ME!!!!

Allie Mo
07-04-2007, 11:15 AM
How about a big solid flap of fabric that hooks on one side or that is sewn on both sides?

Lazy K
07-04-2007, 11:29 AM
CAN't those be left behind your legs???

Yikes! No! It's really irratating!

Lazy K
07-04-2007, 11:33 AM
Like I said I was just going to add some tapes to the front and tie them because you just need a little something to keep the bustle in place.

The shorter lobster that I made from the Wisconsin Historical Society pattern has tapes/ribbons in front. I think the pattern calls for buckles but I just tie mine.

Madame Olive Yew
07-04-2007, 11:47 AM

Miz Mo, thats what I was thinking. You just worded it better.

Drusilla
07-04-2007, 12:56 PM
I have the same problem, but I just ignored it, trying those front tapes sounds like an exellent idea. I have some twill tape I will try using that.

Ida Hands
07-04-2007, 06:23 PM

Hey, Clancy!

I am about to attach the top set of lacing stays, and of course the notch is missing from piece 10 to tell me where to lay the piece. I see that it is not attached exactly to the top, but I can't tell how far down to place it. Is it an inch from the top? 2 inches? What did you do?

:ty :ty

Clancy
04-08-2008, 03:37 PM
Hey Kat

Mine is attached at the top even with the side seams. I have used a grosgrain ribbon for the waistband with D rings. So mine may be slightly different to the pattern.

If you still cant work it out, when i get home from work tonight i will pull the petti off my dress form and take some pics for you.

Madamekat

It's coming along! I'm about to pin the boning channels to the lower layer. I got distracted by school and the arrival of the antique parasols I bought from Bustle Babe. They are fabulous!!

It'll be finished as soon as I get the grommets and washers from the ever kind Cinnamon Teal, so in a few days.

I bought a wire cutter from Home Depot today so I can work on making the steels. I hope I got the right kind!
