Yes, with a little tweaking it sure would.

Nellie yes you would use the tea gown and an underskirt, I do believe there is a NF one that has a trin already? just cut the neck on a v and stop the buttons part way down thats all I would do, use the watteu (sp?) pleated back and then pull up a few artistic places in the back, this will give it more a day dress look and pull the front open so that the underskirt shows nicely.

Fannie I found that dress for some fabric that MIL bought (a reproduction) that is that exact color way and pattern...so yes you will be seeing that dress one day on Miss Scarlett Starr

Gorgeous! What patterns did you use?

Clancy
08-29-2005, 05:26 AM
Nellie

The overskirt is TV362 1884 Wash Overskirt and the bodice is TV416 Ball gown bodice. The underskirt is not a TV pattern but the bottom of a Past Patterns(i think) ball gown. The skirt is in heavy weight taffeta with a black satin overlay band around the hem that came up to a point in the front . You really cant see it in the picture.

I love that scarlet dress from Daniel Deronda...but every time I see that scene I yell, "Dang it, girl, get your gloves on!" Honestly, dancing without gloves... Her mother raised her way better than that.

Thanks, Fannie--you just added a whole bunch of goodies to my ideas folder!

Hello,

I've decided what to make for the EOT striped dress. May I call dibs on this design? Is it okay to make this request? :fb If not, let's hope we don't pick the same fabric too.

Instead of a pleated skirt, I plan to make a round skirt. The round skirt was very popular in sporting outfits during the 1890s. I think it would be cooler than pleats.

Allie Mo

OK, i think i have decided (well at the moment i have the fabric also for this sitting there and its telling me this is the dress) and i would like to call dibs on this dress if no one else already has for EOT 2006.

Im working on the fact that to limit my excess baggage dress will be from the one era, that way i only have to worry about one set of petticoats and not one for different eras of dresses....

Allie Mo

Hi Clancy,

I like it!

Do you have stripes or are you piecing fabric to make stripes?

BTW, I think :Nellie asked and no one answered, is the stripe thing at EOT for day or evening? Oh the shame, if I have to make two dresses :lool.

When are we wearing the striped dresses?

If it's day time I will have to make a striped B-Western outfit to shoot in!!!

Course, it would help if I could find red and black striped material too!!! :re

Tornado Alli
10-08-2005, 07:49 PM
Did we ever decide? Personally, I think daytime and on a day we don't shoot, (which for me may be every day - why shoot when there is so much SHOPPING to do???) That way we get to be seen the maximum amount of time by the maximum number of people!!!!

(you have to think like a Belle! :lool :lool :lool :lool )

Nellie Blue
10-08-2005, 07:54 PM
The only problem with the daytime is that the ladies that are planning to shoot might not all be "off" at the same time. My understanding is that they do the stages similar to Winter Range where there are several start times each day...Kid, you shot last year...is that how they did it?

Miss Ruby
10-08-2005, 09:44 PM
Yes that's how they did it this year and last year Nellie.

This year they had the warm-up match Monday and Tuesday, side events Wednesday, three days main match at staggered times Thu/Fri/Sat then the Top Gun shoot off and posse shoots on the Sunday.

So it's a full week of shooting really!!! :gf

Nellie, I know what you mean about eating out on your own. When hubbie was on deployed for 6 mos(Navy). That was one of my goals to eat out on my own(by myself). It was hard but I did it. I would play a game with myself every week " is this the week I'll do it?" Finally, just did with the help of a book. The other goal was to go to a movie by myself. Still haven't done that.

Miss Ruby
10-09-2005, 01:09 PM
I used to work shift work and love going to the movies so would go by myself during the day when hubby at work. Going to the movies was easy, walk in, sit down in the dark! I'm too chicken to try eating out by myself though!

Hello,

I used to drive two hours go snow skiing by myself. I loved the solitude and doing everything at my own pace. I was terribly afraid of heights when I started. At first I closed my eyes on the lift and practiced deep breathing. Finally, it didn't bother me. Unfortunately, I have only been skiing once since 1999, when I started shooting.

I'm very nervous about going to the convention by myself. The flying, hotel,.... all make me a little. :18

I'm hoping it will be like skiing. The first time, I went with someone. The second time, I managed it on my own.

So, if you see a lost look in my eyes, you'll know why.

I do know several couples who are going.

Regards,

Allie

Last time I went out to lunch by myself, a couple of people were seated at a table near me. One of them was on his cell phone the entire meal and totally ignored the other person he was lunching with. I thought to myself, "I may be here by myself, but at least I'm not eating with someone sitting there being rude to me." It's more fun dining with others to converse with, but don't let being alone prevent you from sitting down to an enjoyable meal and a bit of people watching.

Nellie Blue

Clancy

Nellie, i started shooting on my own also. Im one of few woman down here that shoot without a partner.

You could always take a book or a magazine to read while your eating, that way your not just eating all your food in a hurry to get out of there. Take a study book, make it a time to learn something you didnt know or use it as creative time to dream up knew dresses and costumes.

Allie Mo, i can relate, the first time i travelled internationally on my own i was a little afraid as i had always travelled with someone. In a way it was a good thing, it brings you out of your shell a lot more, you step past boundaries on keeping your conversation with people you know. Travelling on your own you have to start conversations with people you dont know.....

Meeting Lizzie,Shawn,Gyps & Ima and some of the other girls for the first time last year was fun, as we had all only talked on here. Meeting them in person was even better, they really are a bunch of fun, wonderful ladies.

Yee Haw!:yp

UPS delivered my stripes today! Now I need to find a solid to go with it.

I wanted a blue and ivory. (Yes, :Nellie, I'm a big fan of blue too.) However, I could only find that with 65% polyester. Hancock had a lovely pink. I'm not sure what the true color was. It was 100% cotton. Unfortunately, it did not like my complexion.

I looked on line and found the same line of fabric (Martha Pullen Old Paris) at Hancock's Website in a lovely coffee-with-cream brown with ivory color. (Yes, :coffee em ...) It is approx. 1/4 inch stripes.

Now it's back to Hancock for the matching plain ivory, which I know they have. So, I've got it together to start my stripe EOT shooting costume. I still need to know if the plan to stripe includes a dressy dress. I do so love stripes!

Allie Mo

When Matt met me he was amazed that I would go to movies and out to eat each payday alone! Allie Mo, you found coffee-with-cream stripes? Ooooh, oooh, lucky girl! I keep hoping I'll stumble on some snazzy brown-and-black striped taffeta or satin or some such--I think that would make such a great gown for a dark roast kinda gal like me. Haven't found any such yet, but luckily EoT is later in the year next year!

Em,

You mean like this?... I have 6.2 metres (approx 6.8 yards) but it is in two pieces of approx 3 metres each and it is satin. It is black and a taupe colour the stripes are 1/2" wide. The fabric is 46" wide, the stripes run lengthwise not down the width..if that makes sense.

If it is what you want, i could be persueded to part with it...or i can send you a sample to see the actual colour....

PMS was kind enough to send me a copy of the dress templates, so I played around today with my striped dress design. This is what I came up with. It's hard to see them, but I have quilted squares that are black with gold stitching that are around the bottom of the skirt and on the one tail of the back of the bodice. I got them from the junk lady on e-bay. They're pretty neat! The figure 8 design on the back of the dress is a vintage hand beaded applique. I don't think I got the length of the polonaise right (it's a little short), but you get the idea.

Clancy, I hate to say it, but I have to echo Allie: You sure you want to consider letting that out of your hands, or would you rather be swanking elegantly through EoT wearing it? I think it's deee-licious, but honesty compels me to admit I can just see you in those colors. (Okay, yes, I could see me in those colors, too, but hey.) If anyone is interested, here's the color of my stripes. They still have some at www.hancockfabrics.com.

Boy, did I ever see some pretty red and white striped fabric at JoAnn's. It was satin and the stripes were about one inch wide. I think it was costume satin, so it wasn't too expensive to begin with, but on top of that it was 70% off because it was the big sale the week before Halloween. They had 2 bolts of it on the shelf - more than enough for a ballgown.

Unfortunately, I had to pass. :( It would be a year or more before I could make myself something from it. But boy, were the ideas ever running through my mind!

LL, I'd seen that brown and copper stripe and coveted it mightily, but $22 a yard--yikes! But I know if I wait, open to the possibilities, someday my stripe will come.

Clancy, thank you for drooling rights, 'cause you know I was gonna do it anyway. Now I can show my permit if the drool police pull me over!

Now, see, the only thing better than great fabric is great fabric on sale for so cheap that no one will believe it when you tell them. (I believe you, though.) At that price, you can make a designer bustle gown for less than it would have cost someone...in 1880.

I have never bid on fabric. Is $50 reasonable for this type of yardage? Or, will I need to go to $100 and then <all is quiet while Allie looks for the crossed fingers smilie> <we need that smilie or maybe praying hands> just hope I get it?

Thanks for any :fb

Hey, Mo! When I'm bidding on Ebay I think of it this way...what would 100% silk cost in a store...how high am I willing to go for it...how much do I love it...

Go to some of the fabric websites and see what 100% silk is selling for and go from there...

I so totally don't understand not being willing to tell a prospective buyer what the reserve is. What does that accomplish for the seller? In fact, I don't understand the principle of the reserve. If there's a price below which you won't sell the item, make it the starting bid. What's the use of saying, "I want to sell this, but I won't tell you for how much"?

Hmmmm... TV 400, 1871 Day Bodice, with the square-neck option. Sleeves from TV 410, 1873 Polonaise. TV 301, Tie Apron Overskirt (make sure the front apron is cut long enough, and add ruffle) with TV 202, Grand Parlor Skirt (add that sloping ruffle)... Or, TV 208, 1870 Trained Skirt Ensemble, again with the added ruffles. (I kind of like the separate overskirt, though, because you can just see something sashy-looking at the back of the skirt, which I think is the back of the overskirt. Either way has the look, though.)

Such great ideas here! I so, so want a striped dress. Today I picked up 10 yards of silk taffeta in a dark gold and black stripe (clearance at Hobby Lobby for $5/yd--I may go back tomorrow and get some more). I have some silk in a taupe and teal stripe, and some silk taffeta in a black/dark red plaid (though it looks very stripey) that's just sitting here waiting to become something lovely.

Question--you ladies all have such great figures. I don't! But I want a striped dress too. Do you think there's a good way to 'make it work' (a la the awesome Tim Gunn on Project Runway)? Or will I look a million times wider and scare everyone out of my path?

I figured on pairing the stripes with solids, as I don't think I can pull off all stripes. Anyone here have any prior experience with this problem?

Fannie Kikinshoot
03-04-2006, 03:33 AM
Jenny, vertical stripes will give you the illusion of being taller and thinner.....just don't go horizontal.

Coffee Em
03-04-2006, 11:39 AM
You can also reinforce the vertical lines of the style: hit the up-and-down trims hard and make the horizontal ones in the middle of the body (like the bodice lower edge and the overskirt) unobtrusive, or skip 'em altogether. Go for a longer bodice that doesn't stop at the widest part of you, or cut your bodice with a pointed front, or with two long points, like an elongated vest front.

You can use your stripe or print for the front and back sections of your bodice, and use a coordinating dark solid for the front side and front back pieces. There are lots of fashion plates that show this style, and ooooh, it's all about the slimming!

Make sure your bodice fits. You won't look thinner in a loose bodice; snug that sucker up. If you've got a corset under it, it'll lie smooth over your torso, and you'll look divinely shapely (not skinny, but shapely like a 19th-century gal).

Cheers,
Coffee Em

Use the TV 261 skirt pattern as it does not have a train ... 3 to 4 yards. Bodice .... 3 yards. Ruffles add a couple more yards. I am not sure there is an over skirt. May just be an illussion of one. 15 yards should do it! Especially of you use the 60 wide fabric.

What color are you thinking about using?

Nellie Blue

nooo more like 10. the bodice with sleeves three the skirt is not crazy full, a 261 ish it looks. so 4 there ( and actually if its 60 inches wide you dont need quite that much) So thats 7 than figure three for the pleats...the only fabric eating bit will be the diagonial bits they will chew though yardage!

The diagonal is why I though it would take so much...and the stipes running ACROSS the pleats also...

Yes that bit will eat up some yardage....but not crazy...its only so wide. If you get fifteen you can face everything and have a hat and reticule and a little room to make a mistake! A pleat no matter the depth is about a 3 to one ratio if the fabric touches edge to edge like this does. So you need to measure the bottom of your 261 patern and multiply be 3 then figure for the total length of each pleat and do some math... Then for the diagional pleat I would figure twice what you need for a normal one.

If you get 15 yards you can probably make the evening/ball gown bodice the pictures show!!! Get some pretty net lace, and .... oh la la!!!

BTT....should that new skirt be a stripe??????

Hi :Nellie,

On something really special, it's best to err on the excess fabric side. You can always make a ball gown top, things GG mentioned, or add more pleats, ruffles, prairie points, or ruching with the excess.

Also, if you found that you've run short, you could make box instead of knife pleats. It's easier to cheat on the part that folds under with box pleats.

Here's how I match stripes, plaids, etc...it may not be perfect or proper, but it works good enough for me. :D

I set my matching notches (for instance, the notch at the side seam) on the edge of a the same line in the fabric...not the edge of the fabric and notch, but where the seamline will be at the notch. Does that make sense?

Hey GG, I thought you were going to post the pixs I sent you of the beautiful stipped dress you made me. :bow :bow However, I must admit I picked out the fabric. I know that someone else here bought it too. Who was it?

I know this is an old subject but it twas me that also bought that same fabric and was for the EOT stripped dresses we were all doing.. Glad to see YOURS got used as mine is still sitting in it's "needs to tell me what it wants to be" tub along with other fabrics that I forgot I even had... :faint

"Hmmm.. Now I wonder what I planned on doing with that piece of fabric..."

But I must say it sure was fun opening all those tubs and seeing all I had "collected"... :lool

Hanna the dress she is talking about was a gold and black silk? She sent it to me so I actually have no idea where she found it at.

Jessie it was great to see you Sat at JW!! I think I will come down to JL and say howdey if things dont get to frenzied here before convention!

As soon as I saw the picture I thought to myself "Hmmm, that fabric looks awfully familiar" Then I saw her post and knew it was the same material I have... There's a memory of it all rambling around my pea brain just can't seem to stab it with my fork.. :lool
