when did chatelaines start showing up in a lady's wardrobe?

would love to wear one with my 1860's gown. but I am not sure if they were used then....

Miz Pitty, chatelanes have been around for quite some time. I've seen pictures/paintings from the 16th century that show ladies wearing chatelanes.
