Nice shoes you found Jady.....the first ones are listed as Victorian, but they are Edwardian, Mom had a pair just like those that her Granny wore around 1915. Too small for me! I will impart what I know about wearing antique shoes/boots. We have discovered here in the southwest that alkaline soils tend to peel the finish off these shoes due to the composition of the soil, and the older leather treatment methods, so if you live where the dirt is alkaline limited use is best or indoors only. I have several friends who had some beautiful period shoes and wore them to events out in the desert at Old Tucson and for western shows in the Phoenix area, and the finish just peeled away after an hour. I am sure the heat did not help either.

Yep, it was heartbreaking to see those shoes just peel away, the finish and the leather underneath just came right off in big flakes. I can't fit into any period shoes, so those that can are lucky ducks in my book. But period shoes should be treated as precious artifacts anyways. I cannot see them lasting very long with all the running around we do in costume. Just one day of shopping for stuff at events and my new ones are broken in.

I would LOVE to buy the Edwardian shoes! But they are just a TAD to narrow for me! The length is fine though! Bummer!

Wow Dru, that is so sad. Thanks for posting this information. You may have just saved a whole bunch of people a lot of heartache.

Yeppers. There is a whole nother subject, the preservation of real antique clothing. That's actually how I got started on the whole 1880 deal, along with a few more things that were going on in my life at the time in 1998....I started out restoring originals. I found out very quickly how delicate and organic the old materials are. Even researched the various chemicals they used in dyeing and drycleaning and how TOXIC they were. Can you imagine using kerosene to clean your suits and dresses?? Well they did, and they also used dyes with arsenic in it and other such nasty things. I recall a green dress that had enough poison in it to kill several hundred people because it was dyed green...but that is what they used to make the color. Fortuantely that did not last long, but neither did the lady who wore it!!!

Jady,
Those vintage shoes are fantastic, unfortunately they are just too small for my tootsies.
Fleur,
Very cool shoes, I look forward to finding out more about them.

Here is her info!!!! i will send her feedback???? Let me know what you think??
Hi - Actually there are 3 high button shoes coming out. The standard high button shoe, the 10-strap, and the calf high. Each will be custom made according to your foot measurements. When someone is ready to order I will e-mail a sheet which will show how to take the measurements. The high button will be $425, the calf-high $450 and the 10-strap $475. They are being made by the famous shoe designer Oscar Navarro. He was the only one willing to take this task on. Each shoe will, of course, be hand made because they are being made individually for each customers foot. I hope these prices don't scare anyone away, but that's what they will cost to make. I also bought a huge number of antique buttons that will be put on each boot and will include a button hook with each order (also bought on e-bay). The colors are limited at this time to black, brown and the tan that is shown on my web site. Actually the tan color is a little darker than it shows up on my site. The shoes will take about 4 weeks to make. I will take preorders after the ones I am having made are done and I approve of the look of them. I wasn't happy with the way they started out looking and they have started over. I'm not going to sell any shoe that I personally don't think embodies the look of the vintage shoe or boot being reproduced. I will put new pictures on my web site as soon as they are available. And if I'm happy with the look when they are done, your friends, if still interested can start ordering. After talking to your friends, please give me feedback on the prices. I'm not making much of a profit on them - they are just very expensive designs to reproduce. Take care. Joanie
