I haven't sewed anything for probably 30 years, but you ladies are so/sew exciting . . . well, I'm thinking about ordering the Eton Jacket pattern. Any tricks or advice would be most welcome.
I mostly used Simplicity or Butterick patterns and am a bit intimidated by what possible things might be in the TV pattern. Familiarity is so comfortable. Does the patternmaker suggest fabrics and/or trims, or do I have to decide everything?
If it were to come out any good at all, I think I'd want to do a Ripple Skirt TV 296 and a Corselet 492. :faint

Hi Dixie,
:ty for asking this. I have that pattern too and haven't made it. Fannie has a plaid costume (I think) that has that jacket. If so, I'm sure we'll hear from her soon.
I'm wondering how it fits in the shoulders and sleeves as mine are broad and long. Just call me Queen Kong.:help :rofl

Well, the Eton Jacket is one of my favorite patterns by TV!! It goes together very well, and quite rapidly, also. The shoulders have lots of room, especially since it is an 1890s jacket, with big sleeves. I have made this jacket twice, and I love both outfits.
Alli and I made the Sister Dresses for the Reunion a couple years ago:
http://www.carolinabelles.net/fannie/misc/SASS%20Family%20Reunion%20'04%20132.jpg
And before that I had made the plaid outfit that Mo mentioned. I shoot in both outfits. They are super comfy!!

The Polka Dots, blue & yellow, Oh how clean and fresh and Spring! And look how your holster sits nicely as you shoot on that great plaid!
It appears on the Polka Dot, that you are wearing a corselet, is that correct? and if so, do you wear a corset underneath?
May I copy your styling?

I have made the Eaton Jacket as well. Let me tell you there is plenty of room in the shoulders. Most jackets I buy "Off the rack for 21st cent. wear I have to go up a size to commodate for my shoulders & movement. The Eaton Jacket has no problems! It was a breeze to "throw" together. I think it was the second TV pattern I used when I was teaching myself to sew a few monthes ago. I personally prefer the look of the longer option on me, as I have a long torso & I'm not skinney by any strech of the imagination. :rofl
All in all I'd have to say it's a good easy pattern to get familiar with TV & Heather's method of doing things. I also love her skirt pattern, nothing could be simpler. Good Luck!!

Thanks for asking the questions Dixie. I have the pattern too and haven't tried it yet. Fannie and Alli look so wonderful in their dresses. I've seen the photos several times and every time I see them I think WOW! I got a serger for Christmas and can't wait to start making a new outfit.

:ty Fannie,
I have both the skirt and jacket patterns and have not made them. I really like the idea of a corselet with a short jacket. It prevents the poufy blouse bulge between the skirt and jacket.
:ty for the ideas. BTW, I love your hat in the Alaskan photo.

Attn: Abundant ladies
Until my recent weight loss (and still shrinking) I was a bit larger than TV "K" size in the bust. The jacket still looked good, with no alterations. Now--it fits even better across the bust :)
This pattern goes together easily. I'm thinking of making a jacket in a lightweight tapestry to wear with my modern wardrobe. Will finish edges with bias tape made from a solid color. Just deciding on the final fabrics.
Will try to post pix, on "Herself" my mannequin.

Fannie, I've seen the pictures of your plaid outfit a few times, and likewise, every time I see them, I'm inspired to make one right away! I have both of the TV patterns - the skirt and jacket - and can't wait to make them. Causin' A Commotion (my "baby" who just turned 15 last week) :cry loves the 1890's era outfits, and that's the first one she wants me to make for her as well. Fannie, my question - did you also make the white blouse that you're wearing under the plaid outfit, or is that a modern one? If you made it, could I ask what pattern it is? I don't really have a blouse to go under the outfit, so I'm looking for a pattern for one that will look right with it. I'm thinking the TV 491. Anyway, that plaid outfit looks so great - the whole outfit pulls together so well and looks stunning on you.

And Yes, Prairie Wildflower is right, what about the blouse?
Boss Lady, do I need a Serger for these patterns?
What does a Serger do?

Yes, I am wearing a corselet, it is the short version of the TV pattern. I am also wearing a corset as the corselet is only a "belt", no real function. The "polka dots" are really daisies; I am attaching a close up of the jacket.
,
BTW, I love your hat in the Alaskan photo.
Allie, I won that hat on Ebay. After I won the auction, I found out that the seller was a member of the Alley that I had met at the Convention. Who was it? None other than Pretty Mean Shawme. Funny how things work out, huh?

No, I didn't make that blouse, it is actually a Recollections blouse and I love it!! I really need to buy a new one as this one has seen better days. Here is the link to the blouse: http://recollections.biz/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=67&Category_Code=Blouses&Product_Count=4

:bow Even more feminine, frilly and girlie girl! Thank you Fannie so much for showing the possibilities. :bow
And the plaid, your trim and hat match. The outfit is stunning - and you are too!
Thank you for answering about the corselet, now it sounds a little less intimidating to make and the blouse.

Hi Dixie. The serger is for finishing the edges of seams which makes the work go much faster than doing them on the sewing machine.
Thanks Fannie for posting the close-up photos of your outfit. I too thought it was polka dots. The daisies are really pretty, and I like the daisy trim on the corselet.

So, ok, home from work, dinner's done, time to go baste! Bye for now

You put a button in a slot and the machine matches it exactly. Aaaah to have a serger and a new machine...

Miss Chantilly,
I'll come do your button holes if you come cut out for me! But you still have to sew on your own buttons. Sewing on buttons is just a hair under cutting, on my least favorite things to do. Laundry & dishes being my top two worst activities.

That is exactly how my machine does it!! I have a Singer and I just pop that button in the button holer foot and press the reastat and off it goes....I just watch and hold down the reastat.
And my machine will sew ON the buttons, too, as long as they aren't the shank buttons.

Cry babies. I use one of those ancient attachments where you put in the little cam and have to turn the little knob to set it where you want it to start. It always works great unless you have a really delicate fabric that you want to be perfect then it goes all cock eyed and you have to rip it out and start over again. I'm sending all my stuff to Fannie from now on. I hate doing any finishing work.

My machine is a Sears Kenmore Model 1803 Zig Zag from 1974 - :faint
I haven't used it for anything but an occasional hem since my mother-in-law gave it to me in 1979.
The manual says it does buttonholes using a template. That looks easy enough ???
Oh look! It does stretch stitching - with a different cam it does "Pine Leaf" stitching and the manual says this is a "SERGING" STITCH! :chick :chick :chick
Last night I got my back, side backs and sides basted together, tonight I'll challenge the waist band. Did I mention this is just on my muslim mockup?

My Singer died and after lots of help from the Alley I bought a Singer Simplicity. The buttonhole attachment is soooo easy. Just like they said above, drop the button in the slot, and go. It even sews on the buttons. $98 at Wal-Mart. I love it!!
Dixie McCan
02-07-2007, 08:44 AM
A sewing machine capable of that for $98???? Wow, things have changed - my old machine cost almost $400 in 1974 !!! It is in a cabinet and has a bunch of "cams" that will do embroidery and special stitches.
But, maybe, instead of sewing I should be shopping for a NEW MACHINE!:tban :tban

I'm just glad I don't make the button holes by hand!!!! Yicks!!

Oops, I got the name wrong. It's a Singer Simple. One-step buttonholes, needle threader, 25 year warranty, 17 stitches including blind hem. Some of the stitches need an optional foot that is not included but easy to find since it's a Singer. So far I've only sewn some accessories for the house but it works really well. Can't beat the price!

My new Singer does on touch button holes and will even sew on the buttons for you, also. I bought it at WalMart for about $180.00. It has about 80 stitch functions. It is real light to carry, if you need to take it to another room. I just love it.:tban

Bloomin Yankee...did you say that one has the ability to drop a button in and it automatically makes the button hole the right size?
Bloomin'
02-08-2007, 04:41 PM
Nellie, the directions show that you attach the buttonhole foot and set the the dial to the buttonhole pattern and set a stitch dial. Then you open a plate in the buttonhole foot and insert the button. A little stitching and tada! Then you put on the button sewing foot and it will sew your buttons on as well. Both the buttonhole foot and button sewing foot were included. I haven't done one yet though. It also gives directions for sewing buttonholes on stretch fabric. Sounds slick, doesn't it?

I've been unavoidably detained from MY sewing, by my granddaughters, 7 yr old twins. They visited and were looking at my sewing and just DROOLED over the shiney fabrics and lace. So what else could I do, I brought them here, to the Alley!
They went totally girlie over the frills and dresses and could Nana, that's me, make them each a dress with lace that covers their shoes!
Oh, the heartstrings! So off I went last weekend and got McCalls 4764 and fabric and lace and what-nots for the girls what NaNa wouldn't?!
I've been working on the dresses, until this morning, it was so beautiful outside, I got my horse, saddled up and tried the new Ripple Skirt on us. It is almost perfect! It swirls, it Ripples, it glides over his back, just what I wanted and imagined! Yippee!!! So thank you all again for your support.

03-24-2007, 11:18 AM
ok...ummm...let me see if I am following.
YOu started with the brown skirt, which is 90s?? and you hemmed it a tad short?
Problem one susgestion...you can make an under pleat or ruffle attach it under the skrt edge and give it the look of haveing more length, a little 2-3 inch pleat would be wonderful on your contrast fabric...
OK I am loving the green/blue and brown in a big way
The pink workd with brown too, so now are you going to 86 the blue/geen and go with just pink and brown?
I dont think I would expieriment with trying to draft a ripple skirt from scratch... Do you have that pattern? Or a pattern diagram ( something that shows the dimentions of each piece but smaller scale?) These skirts were cut on the bias to get that look and I am not brave enough to wing that kind of thing without some solid general pattern direction...
ok I need to look at the pictures one more time...what skirt pattern are you using right now??
Greeneyed Gypsy
03-24-2007, 11:24 AM
OK ... I take it back I think you can do this...
Make a wide ruffle around the bottom (I bet thats 12-15 inches)...you will want to drop it below your current hem in the from to fix the length issue for you... then you will need to cut the top ruffle and if you can manage at cut s bias it will ruffle and hang so nicely but it takes oddles of fabric. Ok the width of the ruffle at the back of the dress will be much deeper than the front. maybe 1 and a half the length of the front...you want to make the total length of the ruffle about a 2-1 ratio ...ummm bias is going to be a real pain...sorry I sound like a Im jabbering...thinking out loud here...
going to draw something...brb
Allie Mo
03-24-2007, 11:27 AM
Oooh Bloomin,
It's going to be devine. :waiting for :ss
You could make a slip out of matching fabric (slightly heavier than broadcloth) the same pattern as the skirt, and use the peek-a-boo fabric for the bottom of the slip.
You may need to shorten the skirt even more to have a nice expanse of peek-a-boo showing.
Regards,
Greeneyed Gypsy

Oh good...I always wonder if I speak the same language when it come to describing anything, it is much harder than you would think...you can see a thing so clearly in your mind, but then it never comes out in words that way...
I really hope I was helpful...but you should be able to drop down your lower ruffle to hang over the skirt by the 6 inches it is short, its not what you would normally do but it could help get the look you want from where you are with it right now.

As long as it took me to get started on this skirt and jacket, with life intervening as it always will, I've finally gotten the skirt done and started on the jacket. 09-11-2007, 07:39 AM
But even with the beautiful new boots, I couldn't go back to that skirt and the jacket was still too very intimidating what with all the adjusted sizes and so forth . . . until I found this bit of changeable silk at Joann's in the remanent bin. I thought it was my brown but it changed to turquoise matching both the skirt and the brocade jacket/collar lining and voila:

If you have enough of the turquoise trim I think I would put it on the skirt to go with the jacket and remove the gold trim. I LOVE the colors of your outfit.....It is so pretty looking

Definitely the turquoise trim like you've shown on the jacket. That is going to be AWESOME!!! :tban :tban :tban

Wow Dixie that is looking fantastic!
I have that skirt pattern to tackle next and I'm a bit intimidated by it, was it easy once you got started?
Same question for the corselette belt, how hard was that to make?
Can't wait to see your completed pics, it's gonna be a stunner!

:ty Thanks, Allie Mo.:ty
Miss Ruby, :ty the skirt was not hard, but measure your length three times, my skirt has a ruffle because it came out too short. Also, I did not like the closure due to the weight of my fabric, so I substituted with buttons.
The corselette was fun because I got my first taste of boning! But I worry about the grommets – some of them didn’t “grab” really well and may fall out with much use.
I’m thinking if I make another corselette I will use piping around it. It went together really quickly.
Clancy, :ty thank you so very much. Interestingly enough, when we went shopping, my husband was visiting a friend in Oakland, CA, who had a “drop-in” visit by a friend from Australia, who talked about “biscuits from home”. So my hubby gets home and starts talking about Australian biscuits and I pull out the Tim Tams – ha! Was he ever surprised! And HE LOVES THEM – just like the rest of us!
:ty Thank You, MOY! :ty

I just had to butt in here.
Ruby, that corselette is very easy. The really cool thing about it is that, if you are making a skirt out of the same fabric, you can probably make the fashion-fabric side out of scraps. It takes hardly any fabric and they are little pieces except for the front and it isn't very big either.
Now that I've made it three times, I can say get the two-part grommets. They look much nicer and appear to be less likely to come out than one part grommets.
You can do it!
Dixie McCan
09-12-2007, 09:42 PM
Thank you Allie Mo, I will look for two part grommets - I discovered I actually used what are called "eyelets".
Waist size from 20 to 30 takes 1/3 yrd fashion fabric & 2/d yrd lining (why?) and 32 waist to 44 takes 2/3 yard f.f. and 1 yard lining. - That's why my TV 492 says. I bought more of both fabrics because I'm using it for the collar and front lining on my Eton Jacket.
And yes, it goes together quickly and was kind of fun to make!
Nellie Blue

...takes 1/3 yrd fashion fabric & 2/d yrd lining
Because you end up with 3 layers...1 fashion fabric and 2 of the lining....2 layers of the lining holds the bone channels and the fashion fabric hides it. :D

Thank you Allie Mo, I will look for two part grommets - I discovered I actually used what are called "eyelets". Hey Dixie,
Either of mine could be eyelets too. I don't have the package anymore. The word "grommets" just came to mind.

It was said...

and a DRESSMAKER would entertain in the finest salons in her silks, laces and baubles proud to do what she did.. the diffrence in wage was great with the dressmakers making substantially more!!
