Not exactly sewing, but I thought this would be the best place to put it. I got hooked on knitting a short while ago (REAL short while ago) and I just found this site and I thought that if anybody else liked knitting, they'd like this site, too.

I like stuff that's knitted. But not so much with the knitting. I tried to do a scarf in high school, and every time I dropped a stitch all I could do was sit very still until someone came around and put the yarn back on the needle the right way for me. Knitting stresses me out.
Crocheting, for some reason, doesn't. My only explanation is, Hey, brains are weird.

I knit with a strange twist "?" I was knitting away one day http://images.animationfactory.com/imagedir/animations/objects/miscellaneous/hands_with_knitting_needles/hands_with_knitting_needles_sm_nwm.gif(or so I thought) and my grandmother asked me "what are you doing?"
"I'm knitting" I replied
"no you're not!" she said "I've never seen anyone knit like that before!"
Come to find out I was doing some french twist or something weird like that, ah well, that's what I get for teaching myself, I can't do it any other way, so I don't have a nice smooth product when I'm done.
I much prefer crochet.
I don't do much of either lately.
I even have a knitting machine, it fits nicely up in the tippy top of my craft closet.

Chipmunk, I like to knit but I like crocheting more. I found some preemie patterns as well as a crocheted (in the crochet patterns link) bell edging that look interesting. I understand preemie outfits and hats are much in demand by Neonatal units. Thanks for the link to the site. Nellie's Mom

I knit and crochet but not as much anymore. With tendonitis in my right arm, I have a lot of numbness in my hand and can't do as much.
I love making sweaters.

Never tried a sweater...I only learned about a week and a half ago and have 1 1/2 hats done. I learned how to crochet when I was real little and hated it! I think that is why I like knitting so much.
Just curious as to who else liked to...

Well, if that's the only thing it gets to do nowadays, I'd say it's time to haul it out and see how nicely it fits on eBay, to help finance that embroidery machine!

I'm an avid knitter, and my yarn stash is only slightly smaller than my fabric stash. I love working with fine yarns and tiny needles, and especially love lace knitting. I also like knitting from original Victorian patterns although it can be a challenge: different needle sizes, obsolete yarns, no gauge, and instructions that get you started and then say "continue in the usual manner". :18 I occasionally knit modern items - mostly shawls, scarves and socks, with the occasional sweater or vest thrown in.
Shawn - I have a knitting machine also - actually two of them. One is a modern machine that's currently taking up space on our lower level. One of these days I AM going to get it out and finish learning how to use it. :) The other one is an antique cast iron circular knitter, still in it's original wooden packing crate. It belonged to my great-grandmother, but she never used it. (Do I see a genetic trait here? LOL) This one will probably be unpacked and mastered before the modern one is.

Madame D, I'd love to see photos of that antique knitter--I've never even heard of such a thing! What a treat!

I'd have to do a major excavation just to unearth the crate. :) But here are some links to similar machines for sale on eBay. The first one is a much later model than the one I have, but it will give you an idea of what I have.

Making stockings on this would be much faster than knitting them with laceweight yarn and size 000 needles! Now to find the time to play with it...

My dad is a textile mechanic.... As a kid i used to get a kick out of going into the factory where he works and see all the big machines with all the spools of thread knitting away and making all the fabric... Then watching him with all the littel needles they use and how they can make all the patterns in the material. The fabric they knit is more stretch fabric, too bad it wasnt dress fabric i would be in heaven...
I think between watching him do that, my mum works at the same place and works with the patterns and fabric, so i guess you can see where my passion came from as a little kid....

Most of my knitting leaves the house as gifts as soon as it's finished. I do have two knitted fichus and two shawls ready to be blocked. (They have to be blocked to really appreciate the lace patterns.) I'll post pictures as soon as they're finished.

I learned to knit, crochet and tat, of course. Don't do too much crocheting or knitting anymore because of my wrist, still have a shell/sweater already knitted and just needs to be sewed together.
I would like to knit a "shrug" one of these days. Does anyone have a good pattern for one? Kinda like a victorian one, to wear for our SASS things?????

Where/how did you learn to tat, Tatted Lady, and is it a hard art to pick up? I would just love to tat my own lace, and not pay an arm and a leg for the store bought natural fiber stuff. I adore the way the hand made lace looks too, I have an antique corset with it trimming and it's just sooo gorgeous!

Learned to tat from my Aunt when I was a little girl. started tatting edging on all my doll clothes and stuff.
Lately I have been working on some more sets of gloves and purses in different colors. I have finished a set in black for my SIL and a pair of Black gloves for a friend, another set in pink, in purple, and am working on a set in navy blue.
I do needle tatting instead of shuttle tatting, which is about 10 times faster!!!
You can slide beads on your needle as you go, for a very elegant edging. I usually do the tatting seperate, then hand sew it on. so I can take it back off, if I would like to use it on something else.
There are tatting web sites where you can buy all the needles and things, plus "our" public library has videos on tatting, (shuttle and needle).
If you would like to start tatting, I can help if you need something explained. Tatting is very intricate and very time consuming!!! But, so worth it in the end!!!

Tatting is so wonderful. The things you are showing are just plain GORGEOUS! My grandfather used to tat, but I never learned. I do think it would be a great talent to have. Here's to you, Tatted Lady http://www.georgehernandez.com/h/xComputers/Communicating/eSpeak/media/y6/41.gif
