View Full Version : Ladies Gunfighter, which eye do you use?

As I was skimming the Chronicle last night (yep, got it yesterday), there was an article about shooting Gunfighter. He touched on using his dominant eye only while others may use both.

I toyed with training with both and wondered, which eye do you use to sight in? Both or the dominant eye?

Both of my eyes appear to have some dominance. I do not have a true dominant eye which may be the reason that if a target moves, I can't seem to hit it.

I am right eye dominant and right handed. I really squeeze that left eye shut too!

I shoot "one gun atta time" ie. right hand, cock aim fire, left hand, cock aim fire, right hand........... and so on.... referred to as "cock'n'shoot". This means I can use the one eye all tha time (and I do). No-one has ever accused me of bein' fast ;)

.....and I don't know which eye I use... :o ......... I just do it !

But it am FUNNNNNNNNNNNNN !! :D

I love shooting Gunfighter style...and only use my dominant eye for my site picture (which happens to be my right eye).

Although I don't shoot gunfighter, I have done some practice shooting with my left hand only (I'm right handed/right eye VERY dominant)...I tried it with my left eye open and my left eye shut and I was MUCH more accurate with my dominant eye and my left eye sqeezed tight.

Someday I'm going to try gunfighter...after I get as good as I can in Traditional (World Champion....I dream big!!) :lool :lool :lool

Aw, Nellie, jump in! The water's great!!!!

Shucks girl, you never know how good you'll be unless you give it a whirl.

I started shooting traditional and went duelist because I kept bending my arm shooting traditional. So I decided to go duelist to force proper form with the intention of going back to traditional.

Then one day we were fooling around and I tried shooting with my left hand. I shot BETTER. So we bought two .22 revolvers and started to practice. You can shoot a brick of .22's and get exhausted and still have ammo left over!

My intention was to shoot double duelist until I spoke to Lemonade Lucy from Idaho. She convinced me to go gunfighter. So here I am, loving every second of it.

When there's an open class, I'll go back to traditional but I still shoot LGF most of the time now.

:D And ain't it a HOOOOOOT !!!!!! :D

I'm no longer very interested in Traditional, and only suffered Duelist so's I could get good(ish) at one handed stuff so's I could get inta tha two handed stuff (sixgun stuffed inta each of two hands ;))

An' I ain't gonna shoot wiff them olde folks in tha 49er class nixt year neither :spit ('less they has 49erGF)
I's gunna stick wiff ma "Classic Gunfightin' Frontiersman" cattelgoree :)

Mr.Chihuahua Floyd's Kid's Dad, I'll converse with you soon about cap'n'ballin', Fer now you jest watchout fer them "fresh" cap fragments...

I have a feeling that alot of folks that don't know which eye is their dominant eye will find it out at our next shoot. "Rooster Cogburn Souvenier Eyepatches" will be given to all participants and they will be asked to wear them on two stages during the match. Ya see the shoot is based on The Duke westerns and True Grit and Rooster Cogburn are two of the featured flicks.

My biggest concern is one of our most favorite shooters....
We'll have to make sure he covers THE GLASS EYE only!!!!

BHB, I read that article last night too!

I am left handed and right eye dominate, I shoot right handed, I switched after finding out about my dominate eye, thanks goodness, cuz I couldn't hit anything before that:18

I had to shoot a lot of duelist at the last match b/c of movement and my left hand/right eye coordination was not good I missed a lot with the left hand:mad: but was right on with the right hand.

Gunfighter I tend to do much better for some reason, if'n I'd just slow down some I might hit alllll the targets:w2

That's my problem. I am left handed and shoot right. However, with my left hand the accuracy is a bit better. When I did the test described in the NRA Woman's Outlook magazine, there was a little difference in the dominance but not much.

I also have a central blind spot so if a bird flies across it, I don't see it.

Nope. I can't see shooting something for a mouthful of meat anyway! *grin*

Of course, I sure love calling them in.

I dont shoot gunfighter, but i do shoot duelist on a few occassions. Im right eye right hand dominant, i just close the left eye a little, as long as i have my front sight picture thats it, im off...

Apparently it is very common for women to be dominant right handed with a dominant left eye, dont ask me why, i just remember when i first started shooting and Constable Nelson made me check, he was glad i was right hand right eye,

But that said watch me use a computer mouse...my brain does something different i turn the mouse around so its tail is facing you..So in other words if i want to move to the right i go left and vice versa, to go up i go down....i didnt learn this, it was instinct like which hand to write in.....Try it.....

Speaking of LGF, I need a picture of when I did this with BP at the Southeastern Regional.
