Hey ladies,
I have a black corset that I plan on wearing with my halloween costume, my crinoline is one of those tummy slimmer kinds with the high waist & shows thru the lacing on the corset. ( my girlfriend gave me her white crinoline from her wedding dress. ) I need to either drastically modify (and possibly ruin) the waist of the crinoline or make a privacy panel for the corset.
My question is (finally I will get to the point) How do you make a privacy panel. I don't want to expirament because I only bought a fat quarter of the material I plan on using. Besides, I've told ya all before I love asking questions, I get such great anwsers. I'm sure it's probably something simple like measure how much you need to cover & make panel to fit but I would like to know if there is anything else I need to know.
Thank you in advance.
Joy
PS if you do know of any ways to safetly modify a crinoline's waist, please chim in on that too.
THX :kiss

take the piece of material you have, fold it so the right sides are together and stitch around leaving about a 3 inch opening.....clip the corners, then turn it back out, straighten the seams and iron it sharp. Then take the long edge and place it on the inside of the corset and stich it on, about 1/2 inch from the gromets....voila, you have a privacy panel....

So it's a flap, Lizzie, with the other long edge loose under the other edge of the corset? (You can tell I haven't done this...)

A privact panel, while a pain to keep straight while laceing a corset is easy to make.
You measure the length of the corset and check the gap you have in the back when the corset is laces as you intend to wear it. you will need your width to be about 4 inches wider than this measurment.
Just like a pillow case make the rectangle to those measurments (2 x width +2x height). finish the open seam you used to turn it. SO you have a completely finished rectangle with pretty fabric on both front and back.
Then just maching stitch or hand stitch ( depending on fabric ect)the panel inside the corset to the inside of the laces not between the laces and the back you wont be able to lace up!)
Its that easy. Much easier than possibly ruining a petticoat top!:lalala :rofl :chick

Thank you. I felt embaressed to ask,:blush and truth be told that was what I was gonna do but I thought that maybe someone had a little tip or secret. Thanks for the tip about trying to keep it straight while lacing, Joe is usually around when I'm putting cowboy clothes on & NEVER minds helping me with a corset. :wallaby :wallaby

I don't know if this would be period correct or not,,,,,
I sew pieces of 1/2 inch wide elastic ( about 3 or 4 inches long, or whatever length you need) to one side of the panel, (1 every 2 inches or so).
Sew the panel to the corset, (I do by hand).
Then sew the (free) ends of the elastic pieces to the other side of the lacing with the elastic stretched out about the amount that the lacing will be "pulled in".
You might want cut them a little longer at first, then pin them in place and try on the corset, to make sure they aren't too tight or too loose.
As the corset is laced up, the elastic will pull the panel and keep it tight and smooth.
Hope this helps and makes sense!
Then you can lace your corset by yourself and not have to fiddle with the panel!!!!
Try it Nellie and see if it helps!!!

Belle Alley makes me smarter! (Well, better-informed, anyway.) Thanks, gang, for making any future venture of mine into saloon girl territory that much easier. And TL, the elastic is a great idea!

You can also make a 'floating' panel. I actually use spiral boning in my panels so they actually help give added support and don't wrinkle up.
I measure the gap which needs covering so I don't add too many bones, make sure it will reach underneath the grommets on both sides when laced up, add buttonholes on the sides of the bones from the modesty panel and you can simply run the lace through the buttonholes. The big plus is also that the modesty panel will always be nicely in it's place and you can leave it out if you wish too, or do something funky and flip it to the other side :tban

Here I did one with grommets instead of buttonholes.

Now THAT is genuis! :tban :tban :tban :tban :tban
Thank you so much for sharing your technique, I think even just adding a few bones to a traditional privacy panel would help with the floppy foldies.
I adore that black and white corset!

:ty That's actually the inside of the corset! It's a black dupioni on the outside ;) I made a little corset bag in the same fabric as the lining to go with it!

:ty I'm really not the only one who uses floating modesty panels, a friend of mine who's also in corsetry actually did this and inspired me to do the same. :tban

Wallaby Jack,
Did you read the entire thread? If you did then you would know that I need one this time to cover an unsightly crinoline/petticoat. Otherwise I don't much care for the privacy panel. :gg
BTW Thank you to all the ladies that suggested how to go about this!!! It was sew easy! & turned out great!!I went ahead & put boning in. & I used the elastic on the sides method. This was an unbelievably easy project!! Thank you again for all the help!!:kiss

Wobbly dear, the petticoat is a very important part of this costume (spider halloween costume) If I didnt wear it the skirt would just fall right off. I might as well go nekked. :scared :scared :scared Though I might shoot better that way! :rofl
