Hello,

If I understand correctly, puffing is a piece of trim that is gathered on the top and bottom. I think that when you ruffle, you usually use three times the length of the base for the ruffle.

Is there a standard multiplier for puffing?

Thanks for any help.

3:1 is "my" standard rule for any gathering I do...but I've never done any of that stuff...

This is the best I was able to find in my stuff...

Puffing - Use a gathering foot and leave 1/2" seam on each side. Sew at an even speed and the feeding of fabric must remain constant.
Use trim over the edges and embellish as you wish.

Have fun and let us know how it turns out!

I have a good book called the Art of Manipulating Fabric and this is what it has in there.

To estimate using a gathering foot

(Ungathered sample length /(divide by) gathered sample length) X target measurement = Estimated Fabric Length

Single Edge Gathering

Slight Fullness = (target) x 1 1/2

Moderate Fullness =(target) x 2

Generous Fullness = (target) x 3

Abundant Fullness = (target) x 4 (+more)

Hey Ladies,

Thanks for the responses. Clancy, :ty for all the detail. I guess I will have to try some samples and see how full I like it.

I bought that 10 yards of satin (satan, you should see the snags caused by me messing with my buttonholes) for $9. The reason it was so cheap is that the selvage is faded. So, I have plenty of scraps to practice with.

I have the blank canvas (bodice, skirt, and train) finished and have until the convention to get it trimmed up.

I will post photos eventually.

Thanks Clancy! Made a copy of it and posted it to the wall behind my sewing machine next to my inspirations.

Hi Jenny,

Sorry, I haven't been able to sew for a while. Before I do the puffing, I want to apply a row of pleats, which take foreeever. So, it will be a while.

Thanks for asking,

Allie Mo
