View Full Version : What did you do on your Summer Vacation?
Class, now that we're back in school (we are here anyway!) your assignment is to tell us what you did on your summer vacation.
My name is Jady. I went to Lake Powell. That's in Utah. It's very pretty there. I had a good time. We lived on a houseboat for a whole week! It was big! It had 5 bedrooms downstairs and a jacuzzi on the roof!! And a slide!!

Jady, the picture of the sunset with the rainbow is AWESOME!! You need to blow that one up to a large size, frame it and hang it somewhere in your home.

Started of going to Poteau in Oklahoma to visit a friend i hadnt saw for 24 years, stayed for a few days then we drove through O.K., the panhandle of Texas and on to EOT some 730 miles.
Here is one of Belle Starrs husbands Sam Starr

Tracked down Belles grave but it is in private land, well really in an over grown patch very much neglected and soon will be forgotten.

I like the way Joyce thinks... and after all, fair is fair!
I should have tried that myself... "Well, honey if you get to choose a trip to Lake Powell, then I get to choose a trip to New England/Canada"! (I always have wanted to cruise the St. Lawrence Seaway!! ...in the Fall!!)
Thanks for the great pics, Slick Vic!

I took these last year while on hols in C.A. when i asked the location of Clayton Moores grave the lady refused to tell me. I told her i had come 7000 odd miles and what did she think i was going to do ,DIG HIM UP and take him with me. However she did tell me where the statue of David was so i worked it out from there. Where there is a will there is a way.

It's way too hot to go to the west desert and red rock country around here in the summer. I cheated a bit and call it our CELEBRATION THAT WINTER IS FINALLY OVER!
The first is of the sunset in the west desert near Skull Valley, Utah.
The second is for you Kid! A very NICE proghorn buck.
Then the last, WARNING FOR FANNIE!!! A very harmless bull snake. They "pass out" if you walk up to them. This one is getting ready to go down.

Then there's our annual 'red rock fix' to southern Utah. This year we focused on canyoneering in the Goblin Valley area. As a caveat: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR SKILL LEVEL AND HAVE GOOD EQUIPMENT WHEN GOING IN THESE CANYONS!!! We found out by experience that this can be a very dangerous encounter with Utah's back country. We have done canyons in the 3 and 4 ratings. Ding Canyon was a 3 and Dang is a 4. Little Wild Horse Canyon (LWH) is a 4 and we 'thought' we did LWH so why not DANG???? They should have named this something FAR more appropriate (but not appropriate for those pre-legal age of consuming alcohol).
We don't have pics of Dang. I had the sense to leave the very expensive camera at home. I should have left my very sore legs and arms at home too!
Here are some pics of the canyon country of Utah! If you ever do decide to venture forth into these areas: have maps, water, food, water, appropriate gear (people have DIED in these canyons), did I say WATER???
#1: Crack Canyon (easy hike)
#2: Little Wild Horse Canyon. If you came at the Temple Mountain site, you can access the canyon entrance by a mile walk from the camp area. OR you can drive to the mesa directly across from it and knock off a mile. Either way, it's a nice hike through the Reef. As always, bring plenty of water, food, and use common desert sense. These canyons get pretty nasty in flash flood conditions.
#3: Farnsworth Canyon pothole. One of the delights of camping in the desert in the late spring are potholes. Our German Shepherd LOVED swimming in them. I have to admit that Irish Jack and I also soaked in them.
Our summer vacation is Hell On Wheels and Utah War.
