Go rent lots of movies? Are you nuts? The Alley is back up. Okay, I will post a picture of what I will be working on next. Just finished acquiring all of the fabric. As soon as the project I'm working on is finished, I'm starting on my Rebellious Dixie CanCan dress: :sewing

Gypsy, I'm not going to tell El Husband your pirate lady is retired. That resonant "ping" that followed would be the sound of his heart breaking!

I have this secret dress going on. And since so many on here are making CanCan dresses for the Convention, I think it is okay to share. That way we don't duplicate!

:bow You are so talented. I love them both.

Are these for the Saloon Dance?

I'm still hoping to get one "dress-up" dress done. Hope to have photos soon.

:fm :fm :fm :fm
Wallaby, you hit the nail on the head. There will be a huge variety of "won't stay down" skirts at the Convention's Saloon Dance!!!

I have wanted to make this outfit ever since I wrote into one of my scenes on the SASS Saloon during our story, "Pistols and Petticoats". Fannie took the stage wearing a Can Can outfit that resembled the Confederate flag. Her variation of the Can Can started with her belting out the song, "Dixie" and continued from there! What a hoot.

Very cool dresses you guys! Fannie------love the stars and stripes! And so understated, just like something I would have done! LMAO!!!

Alli, I love those colors! The purple ruffles look great!

Coffee Em
08-27-2005, 01:02 PM
Alli, what LL said--the ruffles are like mist, and just the color of the Dragoons in the early morning. Gawrsh!

And Fannie, I think, in that outfit, you're going to be another 19th century superheroine. We may need to get somebody to draw the cover of the comic book for the story "Mason-Dixon Duel!" with you and LL in the superheroine roles.

Cheers,
Coffee (who's been a comics fan for too darned long, apparently) Em

Putting this thread back to the top so Catawba Kate can find it.

Hello,

I caught the cancan bug and made an outfit. It's the LM pattern. I already had it. It seems a little dark.

It's bridal weight satin and heavy. So, I don't think I'll make a ruffled slip. (I don't want the luggage to go over the weight limit.) I also made the pattern's long bloomers.

Anyone have any ideas to brighten it up? Or, do you think it's okay as it is. All ideas are welcome.

Regards,

Allie Mo

PS Wallaby, precedents were set on this thread that the dresses don't have to be on people. ;)

Here is the trim. It's organza and satin ribbon loops. I sewed another braid-like trim on top of that.

Oh Oh! We are sharing!!! I haven't started on the top, (I got side tracked with my masqurade dress!) but here is my skirt, I just love it!)

I don't know, what do you think? I should probabaly do something other than a blue bra for a top.... :re

Shawme,

Those ruffles are wonderful. We'd look like day and night standing side by side.

Hmmm, about that top!

Hello,

Thanks Shawn.

I just had a thought...what happens to bustles and ruffles like this in the suitcase? I'm more worried about the bustle than anything. Should I roll it?

Last year, I didn't take a dress that I really wanted to take because it had a similar bustle (it has the TV Parisian trained skirt). It was also bridal satin.

Maybe we need a class in packing...

Allie Mo

Wow - both dresses are beautiful.

Allie Mo - I don't think you need any more than that. You could always make the petticoat in the burgundy/red colour with one or two ruffles at the bottom inside of all the rows on the inside. As for traveling with suitcases, I've folded lengthwise and rolled; it doesn't get crushed as much and the bulk is more evenly distributed. Although you're still probably going to have to touch up with an iron.

and PMS - how beautiful are those ruffles! Lovely work!

PMS, this is pretty off-the-wall, but I'm looking at that great checked fabric, and the first thing that pops into my head is "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore." Yep, Dorothy, but sexy! You could do such an adorable farm-girl-meets-decadent-Paris-nightlife look, with a square-necked sleeveless bodice with the neckline frothing with those wonderful glowing ruffles...

Okay, I'm going back to bed now. If this is utterly goofy, trust me, it's the flu talking.

Allie Mo, I don't think your dress is too dark at all. That red organza really catches the light, and the black satin is very Rich Villainess - looking. I figure every can-can show must have its own theme, and everyone's show is a little different from the next Alley Cat's, that's all!

Hello,

Thank you all for your opinions and compliments. I agree with your judgement. The can can dress is finished. I had enough fabric and trim left to make a sleeveless top. That will make it an outfit for EOT too. I could just wear the bloomers and sleeveless top in the summer.

I like the idea of having a theme to one's cancan costume. (Em, you come up with good "stuff.") So far, we have:
Fannie, patriotic
PMS, milk maid
Allie, villianess
Others, Alli, GG... what is your theme?

Allie Mo

Oh, dear, oh, dear--I don't have time for this. A great Irish Colleen can-can outfit just popped into my head, fully imagined down to the little emerald green top hat... Somebody please make it stop.
