Poor pups! And 4th of July is just around the corner.

You folks outside of Utah are lucky. We have TWO big holidays in July. The fourth starts it off. Then the *(^%%* fools need to practice for the next THREE WEEKS. That is followed up by the grand finale: Pioneer Day (24th of July). It is a state holiday and the second largest fireworks display in the state is three blocks from my house.
The viszla is suicidal. We won't know about the GDS (shepherd) until this year. She's still very impressionable.

Benedryl does wonders. One in a hunk of burger and down the hatch! The Min-Pin Chihuahuas aren't near as bad as the Dachsy when it comes to thunder storms. She's under the computer desk here now, at least she's calm.............Buck:tql :cgun :sleep

Benedryl or Dipenhydramine (generic). 1 mg/lb. So if you have a small dog: one 25 mg capsule. If you have tiny dogs, you might try to empty the capsule and split the dose because 25 mg could make them edgier (and they are edgy enough!).
Lab sized dogs: 50 mg every 12 hours. Huge dogs: 1 25 mg and a 50 mg will do it.
Since I already have a rather irrational shepherd, we make her sit it out.
Capsules are every 12 hours. More often can make them irritable.
(there goes the vet tech in me again!)

We are lucky. We have fireworks go off in the stadium about 5 minutes away from our house. We can sometimes see them from our front door. My dog(Heeler mix) likes to sit in the doorway and watch them. No "ooos" or "aahhs" from her yet.

I welcome the vet tech in you. Thanks for the info. My niece can use it. Has a yorkie and she freaks out. So will tell her to 1/2 the 25mg.

My personal preference is to ignore the dog and put it in a crate if it is one that bolts.
My viszla will bolt so we relax, put her in the kennel and ignore her. There is a fine line with the drugs between relaxing the dog (Acpromazine is a popular one) or agitating the dog further. Some do well on it, others really don't.
So we simply put our dogs in their crates.
Our lab is BOMBPROOF. She sits outside with us and ignores all the fuss. We don't know about the shepherd yet. Should be fun finding out. Her reactions to gun training have been mixed so far. She's not real worried but would prefer to be away fromt he shooting. So we'll work her slowly.
