Ok, I hope this helps. First you must have a picture saved on your computer already. So go look for one that you like and save it. Then you have to resize it. 80x80 pixels or 19.5 KB whichever is smaller. Go to "edit avatar" in your Control Panel. Don't mess with any of the other features in there. Go to browse. Click on browse and find your resized picture. If it's still too big it will tell you when you click on "submit". You'll have to resize it till you get it right if you don't have a good picture publisher (I don't). Hit submit and it should be there. If not, whine to Livermush or Fannie can help too. She can resize it if you're having trouble with that. Good Luck!! :jp

You'll have to resize it till you get it right if you don't have a good picture publisher (I don't).
For fancy picture editing I use Microsoft PictureIt but for quick picture editing I find myself turning to IrfanView. It's the simplest, most intuitive picture editor I've found, and best of all, it's free! You may download it at: http://www.irfanview.com/

Once you have it installed, right click on any picture on your hard drive and select Open With >> IrfanView

To resize your picture, select Image >> Resize/Resample

Select pixels as your Unit

Enter your desired width or height (if you keep "Preserve aspect ratio" checked, then you need enter only one of the values, it fills the other for you.)

For example: for your avatar, you would enter 90 for your longest edge. For your member picture, you would enter 100 for your longest edge.

Click OK.

Then select File >> Save As

Assign your file a recognizable name and easy-to-remember path and .jpg for your suffix and click Save.

Kate, Changing your Dots Per Inch setting might help the fuzz factor. Open your pic in IrfanView, then select Image >> Resize/Resample. In the DPI box, change from 72 to 150, then click OK. A setting of 300 would be even crisper, but might make the file size too large in KB to upload. To quote Professor Harold Hill: "Experimentation! Trial and error!"

Also, along with Irfranview (which works well btw...) another great free one I am liking recently is Picasa2. To do simple resizes of images, I still open them with paint, go to image, and use "stretch and skew" to resize. 30 million ways to get to the same place, don't ya love computers!! ;)

OK... I found one that I want but need soon legal advise. How do I avoid copywrite etc laws. The pic I want is on the owens site. Can I just save it and go for it or will I get in trouble. I see that several of the Alley pics come from this site and I was just curious....I know it killed the cat (which happened to be my nick name many years ago because I have green eyes). If it is posted on the web does it become public domain as there isn't any expectation of privacy??? Not up on this type of law? Maybe these are silly ???? :18

Thanks Fannie, for looking for me. I've been out since 8 this morning getting my truck fixed after hubbie brought it home last night broke. It was only supposed to take about an hour, here it is after 3 now and I'm finally home. And to top it off, looks like something else is wrong, now it don't want to go at all. Anyway, I like the "Calamity Jane" one but can the Jane be changed to Kay? If not, can it be left off? I'm off to find youngun' now before it rains on her on her way home.

Yes, hubby broke it just like he always does, then brings it home for me to fix. It gets better gas mileage than his Jeep. It has over 200,000 miles on it, a '92 Ranger. I agree with Nellie about the sizing, so sorry ya'll waisted your time on my behalf. I guess I'll just be one of the folks without an avatar until I come across the perfect one. Oh Fannie, that last one would be most suitable, :) but I'll pass for now. Thanks everyone for your help!!

I'm here, I'm here! I must admit, it was a fun, fun weekend. Although, I did give them a lot of footage for any future "Cowboys Bloopers" episode. There was one scene we were shooting when Tequila asked me about my rifle and my mind just went blank. I looked at my rifle and said, "What the hell are you anyway?" It was too funny. :lool Thank goodness for retakes.
