Do you shoot in only one category with only one set of guns? Or do you experiment?
I started out with a pair of 4 3/4" Vaqueros, shooting 38 specials, a Marlin 94 carbine, and a 20 ga double barrel. (I hated that shotgun). I shot traditional.
Eventually, I decided to experiment with gunfighter. I got a pair of Beretta Stampedes. Still shot 38s, they also had 4 3/4" barrels. Then I got my '97. I LOVE THAT SHOTGUN!! I also shot duelist for a while until my left hand learned to cooperate.
Last year I started to look at the Classic Cowgirl category. I liked the idea of the clothing and caliber requirements. But alas, I owned not one gun that I could use. The next thing I know, I've bought a 73 in 45 cal and an 87 shotgun. Doc said I could use his pistols. That was all well and good until I saw last month's Chronicle and saw them purty engraved Remingtons in an ad. Well, I just happened to see my favorite gun shop owner at a shoot and said "Did you see those purty, fully engraved Remingtons in the newest Chronicle?" To which he answered, "Yeah, do ya want a set? I have ONE set at the shop."
Okay, so now I have a set of very purty pistols awaiting me and I'm gonna be a classic cowgirl for most of the rest of the year.
I like to move around and try different classes and different guns. It helps me as the contact person for our club in talking somewhat intelligently with new shooters.
What do you shoot? What categories have you tried? Got any likes or dislikes ya want to share?

I have shot, Traditional, 49'r, Classic Cowboy, Dualist, Gunfighter. AND I have shot them all like a "warthog", (no reduced loads .44-40). I have varying opinions regarding each category. But I won't spoil your experimentation with my views. Instead I encourage you to try them all. Find what you like and play.

Like you I started out Traditional, then duelist, then gunfighter and am now a classic cowgirl. I like them all, but classic is my favorite. Sure is a good way to get a lot of new guns though.............:tban :tban :tban

I normally shoot traditional, have played around with FC once and will do that some more. In the near future I will be shooting B-Western and see how that goes. I think I'll stick mainly to Traditional though, I like it a lot. :)

I started in Traditional and dressed B-Western. Leapt feet first into B-Western when they started it, all I had to do was change back to my much loved old rifle as I had just got a '73 and you can't shoot them. To be honest I never much liked the '73 so wasn't sorry to see it go.

I started in Traditional and decided to try duelist. I loved it. Then I watched those gunfighters and started practicing with our .22's. I got to a point where I decided I liked it more than duelist and stayed with it.
I also when with the Stampedes. We had some problems (now they are resolved above and beyond our expectations!) so we got a pair of the old Ruger Bisleys. I stayed with them but now I also play with the Stampedes on occassion for fun.
I also thought about Classic Cowboy but don't have the guns and Frontier Cartridge categories. Those are going to wait a while.

I won a '51 Navy at EoT'03 and loved it so much I bought another 4....(all .36) :)
I had took up gunfighterin' about then :D and then I bought a .73 in .45....
Now I qualify fer Classic, and Frontiersman, but I shoot Gunfighterererer
I call it "Classic, Gunfighterin' Frontiersman" :D:D:D
(I hope to get my Colt Lightning back this weekend, and have a Chinwester '87 on order)
I love my Navy's, '73, and Rossi....... and they seem to tolerate me.

Just realised I never said what guns I shoot.... :o
I have stainless Ruger Vaqueros 5 1/2 inch in .357, initially we shared them but now they're 'mine'. I have a Baikal SxS 12 gauge shotgun and a Marlin 20" Cowboy (not Competition) in .357 also. The Baikal I've also had for years but the Marlin is only a year or so old, my beloved Rossi is enjoying her retirement though.

I have always shot traditional but i dont always dress that way. I often have people tell me i should shoot B Western because i wear b western clothes sometimes. I just tell em the rules say i can wear what i want shooting traditional. In fact i can shoot duelist if i want in traditional category, there is nothing that states you have to shoot the traditional way either.Sorry thats a little tangent...Plus i spent a small fortune on my cross draw rig.
But I learnt on 45's but when it came to buy my own set i had got a set of 357 Uberti Cattlemans. When the gamer came out mor ein me i then bought another set of 38/357 ruger vaquero's stainless 5 1/2. My rifle has always been a Marlin Cowgirl Comp in 38 sp and i have a Boito(stoeger) 12g sxs shotgun stainless with black wood

I started out shooting traditional then decided to switch to gunfigter. I occasionally will shoot BP, but always gunfighter style. I've thought about shooting B-Western, but I don't want to get trapped in a category that won't allow me to be as versatile in my costuming. I don't have the guns for Classic Cowgirl, though. I shoot Ruger .32 revolvers, a Marlin carbine in .357 and a Winchester 12 ga. pump. Woohoo!

I started in Traditional with .45's, a 24" Marlin CB-EAA BBH 7 1/2"- Ruger Vaq 5 1/2". Continued in trad. with the .38 cast-offs from my wife with the addition of a Marlin .38CBC. The cast offs were a Cimarron SAA 5 1/2" and an EAA BBH 4 1/2". Both these braces were used with either a Marlin 1898 or a Stoeger 28" in 12ga. I went to Duelist after my last Carpal Tunnel surgery. Liked it and have shot Duelist ever since. I've added a third brace to the mix, EMF SAA's in 4/34 38-40 with a Marlin Model 1889 24" in 38-40. The last addition was a TTN 1878 Colt hammered SxS coach gun in 12ga. I'm looking to replace the two EAA's with either Charles Daly's or Taurus Gaucho's.......Buck:cgun

I've only shot Traditional! I shoot Great Western II's in 38 spl, a Cimarraon 1873 in 38 spl, and a Norinco 97 in 12 ga.
Can't shoot one-handed cuz my thumbs are too short.... :lool
I'm not old enough to shoot 49er or Senior .... :gg
I don't have holsters to shoot B-Western & I sold my Marlins... :go
And I have asthma so the categories that shoot black powder kinda scare me on the breathing side... :flame
So I'm sticking with Holy Terror! :rofl

Modern, or Traditional. Main guns are 4 5/8" Uberties in 45 Colt. 44 cap and ball for a change, but still traditional. I sometimes shoot duelist for a few stages, never a whole match.

OK at the risk of sounding stupid here goes. I want to shoot Ruger Vaqueros 38/357 pistols, a Marlin 38 rifle and a 12 ga something.(not too sure as of yet pump or sxs). What catagory would I shoot in? I told yall that I was new to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also everyone that I have talked to so far reloads is that a necessity or can you buy round light enough especially in the shot gun not to have to reload? Texas Butterbean

Hey Butterbean!! I just started and after three months finally have all of my guns. Pietta '73 Navy Arms in .38, 1894 CB Marlin in .38, and Rossi 20 ga sxs with hammers. I don't reload myself but save my brass anyway. I didn't used to save the shotgun shells either, but do now, just in case. The shotgun shells I buy at Wally's, the .38 from a place in Texas City. 25 bucks for 200 rounds. I'll answer as many of your questions as I can tomorrow.

Butterbean, I had the same question when I started.
With those guns you can shoot Traditional (as long as the sights on the pistols are not adjustable...sorry, I don't know nuthin' 'bout no Rugers! :noe ).
If you have a dropped loop holster (tops of you guns fall below the top of your gun belt...looks like the TV cowboys from the 50's-60's) you could shoot B-Western, but there's a lot of clothing requirements B-Western Requirements (http://www.mulecamp.com/bwestern.html) :sewing
I always hate to ask a lady her age, but if you're 49 or over, you could shoot 49ers. I've only got 5 more years! :lalala
Of course, there's lots more options, but those are good for a start.

There's also duelist and gunfighter after you get a handle on the guns.
I buy my shotgun shells (12 guage): AA light target loads. For weekly matches we reload a lighter load.
Over time, it pays to reload.

Texas,
Reloading is a question of how much do you shoot and do you want a new hobby all its own. If the two of you shoot two matches a month, yes be looking into reloading equipment. I been reloading for better than 25 years.
I load 105g 38s for Chipmunk which I have not found commercialy.
Shotgun reloads don't save as much $ as rifle and pistol, but I am loading 7/8 oz and 3/4 oz 12 ga which the local stores don't carry.
Blackpowder catrage is another subject altoghter.
I need to upgrade to a progressive, but loading room is kinda small, next house will have a Dillon installed.
Hope this helps.
CF
PS: I do't save any money, I just shoot a lot more. LOL
