If you wish to have IrfanView be your default
program when opening pictures, checkmark the file
types you want. IrfanView isn't the only program
I use for editing pictures, so I didn't make any
selections. You will still have the option to
open pictures in IrfanView for editing even if
you make no selection.

I very rarely access IrfanView via its shortcut
on the desktop. I prefer to launch from a
Quicklaunch icon in my Taskbar, so I dragged and
dropped the shortcut there. (If one still
remains on your desktop, you may drag it to your
Recycle Bin along with the iview398.exe icon to
reduce clutter)

Rose, thanks for this class. Those Alley Cats that don't have a photo program that resizes will sure appreciate it. You are top notch. :ty

Thanks, Fannie! IrfanView is a good place to start for a newbie. I figured if I could teach my Dad and my MIL how to use it, *anyone* can learn to use it :)

It also has some nice advanced features (such as batch conversions) when you become comfortable with the photo-editing process.

Thanks for the info Garnet Rose!!! I'm recommending this to ALL my friends! It's pretty darn easy to use.

You're welcome, Nellie! My MIL likes to print out pictures in 4 x 6 format and Irfanview's resizing feature makes that easy, too.

Choose Image then Resize / Resample

Choose Set New Size, then Inches instead of Pixels

Change the shortest edge to 4 with Preserve Aspect Ratio checked and it will automatically set the longer edge for you (which will be something like 5.33, not 6 exactly)

Then the pics can be printed out on 4 x 6 paper and shown around like developed pics.

:ty Thank you so much for this Garnet Rose, I can finally post my own photos without e-mailing them to Nellie for re-sizing.

Thank you Nellie for pointing me in the right direction!

Here's how you actually post the photos on the Alley...
Once you get them within' the size, go to the bottom of the "reply" screen. Click on Manage Attachments.
Click on Browse. Find the file in your computer of the pic, click on that file.
Click on "Upload". It will take a few seconds and the file name will appear on that screen. Once the file appears on that screen, close the window.
Then hit "submit reply" to get the file on the forum.

I found the easiest way to downsize pics is with Microsoft Office Picture Manager (part of the Microsoft Office package). Any program that will resize pics will work. Make sure you have the original saved and work off a copy. This way you don't destroy your original file

I can't figure out how to get Irfanview for Mac. The pages I go to all error out on me. Things are different for a Mac user.

With a Mac, you should have software that came with your system to resize your photos...I'll talk to my Mac friend tomorrow and see if I can find out what it is called.

I've been finding cropping and resizing to be easier using Microsoft Office Picture Manager rather than using IrfanView, so if you have it on your computer here's how it works.

Find the picture you want to crop or resize. Right click on it and choose Open With -- Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Left click on Edit Pictures in the upper menu.

Left click on Crop in the list on the right side of the page.

Left click and hold your mouse button to drag the dark outlines to where you want your picture cropped.

Left click OK.

To RESIZE:

Left click on Edit Pictures in the upper menu.

Left click on Resize in the list on the right side of the page.

I like the "predefined width and height" feature because it's easier to have consistently sized photos on my blog.

Select that "predefined" radio button and choose from the pulldown menu: Web Large (640 x 480)

Click OK.

From the upper menu, choose File -- Save As

I usually insert "cropped" or "resized" after the photo number, so for example P100600 would become P100600cropped or P100600resized. Then click the Save button.

Close the program and when it asks if you want to save changes, click Don't Save. That way you have not altered your original photo, but you'll have your cropped and/or resized photo saved for posting on the internet or emailing.

From a fellow insomniac, thank you!
Your information is what I've been looking for!
(You're still up at oh too early in the morning? I was too, but this idiot flu has been giving us grief and I have an excuse... I did not want my coughing to keep Melissa awake... but then her coughing was keeping me awake... so I got out of bed and made a big pot of tea and we've been sipping tea and feeding each other cough drops all night!)
