View Full Version : How to wear a sash?

Good morning all!
I know that several folks in SASS wear a sash (one's made by Rocky Meadows comes to mind), but I've never seen one worn in person. I'm thinking of wearing my Clan Wallace sash and need to know what is the acceptable way to wear it. Does it go under the gunbelt or what??? It will be a little dfferent than the color coded/shooting category sashes, but I thought it would look cool and go with my alias. I already have an 18 inch dirk to wear as well...at least I could wear William A.A. Wallace's clan tartan some way!! :fb

Do you know how to tie a proper knot? you can wear it over or under the belt!

It's worn directly under the gunbelt. You do not have to tie a knot, "per se", just wrap over one time. The gun belt will hold in place. You do not want any bulky knots getting in the way of a smooth draw!

I tied a "proper knot" about 21 years ago according to my better half! :dc
I've never seen a sash tied at all and haven't even tried to tie the one I have. It is 11 inches by 90 inches, so I figure I can fold it over to 5 1/2 inches wide and get it around my waist twice with some left over.

I saw one at Winter Range...it was worn just below the waist, tied at the side over regular button-up pants, shirt, and suspenders...here's some photographic examples of how they were worn...

Dang, haven't found a Hickok photo with sash yet. At least one contemporary description of him has him wearing one, and tucking his pistols in it. Don't think that would be SASS legal...

Dang, haven't found a Hickok photo with sash yetCoffee Em, this is the only picture I could find. Looks like the one I remember, but looks like a belt here instead of a sash. The history books all say he used a sash, though. This musta been his later 'civilized' fashion...:)

Excuse me, I have a question for Mr. Wallace.
Would you perchance have a kilt in that clan tartan?
:wallaby:grin
...and if so, do you have any pictures????? :w2

Miss Tornado Alli,
I don't have a kilt in that tartan due to the fact that I am of the House of Gordon and my clan tartan is green, blue, and yellow. My alias is derived from a famous historical Texas Ranger that was a direct decendant of THE William Wallace. Therefore, I thought it would be nice to have a sash in the Wallace Clan tartan to wear. Kilt's are very expensive, as they have to be made to exacting measurements to fit the individual properly. The tartan wool material runs about $50-$75 dollars per yard with a minimum of 5-9 yards to make a kilt.
I do, however, have a picture of me kilted in the Gordon tartan. I posted it in another thread, but would be glad to share it again if you wish. :)

Aha! Yup, that'd do it, with either tucking that over-the-belt bit of sash back under the belt, or tying it to hang behind the holster instead of in front (bet the artist wasn't thinking about having to jerk that right pistol in a hurry when he painted that bit...)

William,
Thanks for posting this. I never thought of the idea of wearing a tartan sash like that. I have a tartan sash in the MacLeod of Harris that I just might wear under my gun belt.
You know, our clothing is to resemble something that would be from the 1800's or out of a Western Movie. I wonder what would happen if I showed up at a monthly match wearing my Black Watch kilt and the military uniform worn by that regiment during the late 1800's. I know what would happen if I showed up at Bust Out wearing that. It would be a combo, both man in kilt and man in uniform.

I've thought about wearing a kilt to shoot in, but I'd hate to ruin a very expensive kilt playing cowboy...now, wearing the full military or Prince Charlie formal wear at a ball would be more appropriate I think! I think the sash idea is pretty cool...numerous folks wear them based on categories of shooting and the Scottish sash is usually 11 inches wide and 90 inches long and would make a good sash for cowboy wear in my opinion...I think I'll wear one at Bust Out! and see!

You've mentioned this more than once. I'd never heard of it before. What color sash goes with which categories? Where can I find out more?
Thanks

Well, here's what I found when I checked the SASS Wire...
Discussion of sashes... (http://sassnet.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31639&view=findpost&p=382635)
"....Red was for Duelist, Black for Gunfighter..."
Maybe someone that knows Rocky Meadows could ask her....

I thought black was for black powder/frontier cartridge? (And really, black is for anyone whose outfit looks good with black. This is sooooooo not an official rule-thing, these colors. They're just for fun.)

Calico,
The unofficial answer is (as per responses from the SASS Wire):
Black - Soot Lord (Blackpowder)
Maroon/Wine - Duelist
Purple - Gunfighter
Black with Purple stripe - Blackpowder/Gunfighter
I believe Rocky Meadows was making sashes for folks and there was a general consnsus about which color went with what category. Some had them monagrammed with their initials and such as well. I thought I'd do something different and go with the Wallace Clan tartan as a sash to represent my alias' family background!!
