Yee-haw! Just got an email that my gun leather is finally on the way! I've been waiting for nearly a year...now I'm almost ready to start actually shooting. Just have one gun left to buy.

I hope it fits okay. I'm kind of nervous...it's been so long that I was getting worried it would never get here.

Hopefully I'll finally be able to start 'playing' SASS this year :gf

DO NOT WAIT ANOTHER WEEK !!!

GO, THEE, TO A RANGE AND BE INVOLVED !!!!!

You don't NEED to have all your equipment to be involved, you just need you.
Folks there will look after you right nice, and they'll temporarily suppliment any shortage that you might still have.

Go and meet the PEOPLE.......... they are what makes this sport sooooo good :D

..........with respect........:wallaby

Jennie, come to Thunder River Renegades match this weekend. You can access their site from the Texas Regulators site. We just had a great time this weekend at the Regulators. I shot my first match and had a clean stage.

hope to see you there!!

By all means shoot, then buy guns. Might find something you reallly like.
I've loaned guns and leather, and borrowed guns and leather and given ammo and been given ammo.
I, personally, just like to shoot.

As Wallaby said, Get thee to a range and shoot thy first match.

Thanks for all the great advice! I am sure you are right about goin' out and borrowing and getting started, and I know for a fact that the folks I've met are so friendly and helpful they would be the first to agree! SASS people seem to be the nicest and most generous folks I've met in ages.

I guess I'm just more comfortable having my own 'stuff'--I don't have to worry about bothering anyone, or breaking anything that's not mine. It's just a personal guideline for me; I never get involved in a hobby until I have the basic starting gear ready to go. I'm weird, I know. (My other personal guideline is: I must be able to handle/set up/carry my own gear alone.)

And I will definitely take to heart the advice about fun and safety! I am an old pilot, not a bold one. And having fun is my only reason for playing SASS ;)

Kay, great to see ya! And CONGRATS on your shootin'! Great job girl! I will have to check out the Thunder River gang. Sadly, I am just now getting over a nasty, nasty cold/virus/plague and couldn't have made it anywhere last weekend. Next time though!

Well, I got my gun leather today! It sure is purty--nice job from San Pedro Saddlery (on the advice of several Belle Alley members). And it fits!

Yes, I rec'd my new rig yesterday, and it is fabulous. I am going to post pictures of it this weekend when I get a chance to wear it with one of my shooting outfits. Mernickle is even going to name the new style carving after me, is that cool or what??? Skye

Are you going to wear it to Eldorado this weekend? That's TOTALLY cool that they're naming it after you!

Hi Nellie! We cant' make it this weekend, Dennis has to get his car running again, but we hope to be out at Jean next weekend, and yes I will wear it, have to get used to. I can't wait, here is a picture of it.........the carving matches the flowers on the buckle, and I have the shot gun belt to match too. :dc

Mighty purdy shootin' leathers you have there!! I have a question though.. I have yet to get mine, and not sure exactly where to go to get it. Any suggestions? What I am finding by reading other posts, both here as well as on the SASS wire and CAS City forums, is that it is taking a LONG time to get your gun leather after you have placed your order.. Upwards of 6 months to a year... Is this comon with all leather makers? I hope when I do decide on my rig that I won't have to wait so long..

Starr, the time it takes for leather, depends greatly on how much detail and design you are looking for. The more intricate and the more well known and respected the maker the longer the delay. Off the rack stuff is made a little quicker, but not neccesarily less expensive, depending on who you go to. Take at look at this one. Very expensive, and it can take upwards of several weeks to several months. Depending on back log.

There as many leather makers as there are cities in the U.S. and each is competing for your business. If you want authentic period correct leather try:http://www.westernstarleather.com/ Their leather is very accurate and has been written up by Phil Spangenberger. John and Maggie have the original designs and stamps to correctly mark your rig. You also can buy one of the many rigs that are offered for sale that fit you. Or the Carolina Belles can lead you to the Tequila Lady Rig. No matter your choice, make sure YOU are happy and the makers have a good consumer service policy, because sometimes things happen. Best of Luck on your search. If I can be of any other assistance, I can be found here!

Hi Starr! I ordered my new rig from Bob Mernickle at the SASS Convention. He is well known and has made rigs for quite a few of my friends. It usually takes him 4-8 weeks depending on what your order. Mine took 9 weeks but that was because I ordered out something brand new, a B Western Rig cut Lady style with a new style of carving (dogwood flowers with stippling and diamond pattern, along with border tooling, etc.) Plus is was around the holidays. So it took a bit longer. Bob is great to deal with, and has rigs in all price ranges. You can find him on the web, but my new rig isn't up on it yet. Bob lives up in Fernley, Nevada, so he is not so very far from you! He kept me up to date with e-mails, and I know he has great customer support. There was a thread on the SASS wire a couple of weeks ago praising him too. I started out with just an inexpensive rig from Cabella's until I knew what I wanted. Skye

Wow. those are nice holsters Skye!! I really, really, really liked the Holy Terror rig in Sunset color.. THis is my dream holsters I think.. I can't start off with such expensive ones - will have to settle for something along $150-200 price range - at least until I get my first gun(s)... Sure is purdy stuff those are.. :)

PS, you're probably thinking about San Pedro out of Tombstone. Big Ed's stuff is quite good, but he has had health problems in the last year as well as staffing problems. They kind of got behind and that's why they've had such long waits. Ed's trying to catch up now. My wife has a couple of his Big Ed's for her Cim. Model P jrs. and they're works of art. Once you get some revolvers, then you can get the leather to hold them. For a first rig, simple is better and also will get it to you quicker....Buck:cgun

Yeah - I remember reading about Big Ed on the SASS wire - I was sorry to hear he was having health issues.. I am glad to hear a long wait (6 months or more) isn't the norm when ordering gun leather..

I will have to go cheap and simple for a while once I get going..I do believe the Holy Terror rig is "IT" though - I love the simple, yet stamped with just the right amt of border tooling too. I had a gal email me a couple of days ago (Penny Wrangler) and rave about her Holly Terror holsters.. So they are on my "wish List" for another time down the road when I can afford 'em....

Penny Wrangler is a good friend of mine, she does love the Holy Terror style! I saw the one you like, Starr, at the convention, and I liked it too because it is a little different and classy. I will tell you that if you have any curves, the "lady" cut that they use on the Holy Terror rigs is great, doesn't cut into you. That is how they cut my belt too. Have you seen Cabella's catalog? They have a new style of holster and belt in a two tone color that looks nice....I know the seasoned shooters don't like the cheaper sets, but ya gotta start someplace, and I don't see any reason to spend big bucks until you know for sure what you like. Isn't this fun???:dc Skye

Yep, Skye - this is a fun.. I have enjoyed my self in this place emensly already!! I haven't seen the Cabela's catalong yet. I will take a look tomorrow - I imagine they have it on line.

Your new holster is beautiful too. I hope to see you with it on someday..

Holsters, let's see, I've had a few...
I started out with a rig from Black Hills Leather. It was a nice rig, but once I had being doing this for a little while, I realized, it wasn't exactly what I needed. Black Hills Leather Rig:

Then I was fitted for and bought a Kirkpatrick Laredoan crossdraw. It's a great rig.

I'll try and get the digital camera this weekend to take a photo--but really it's not anything different, just basic. I got the 'Cherokee Jack' rig from San Pedro Saddlery, contoured for a lady. Nice folks, but it's true, they seemed very behind until recently. I actually wish they'd been a little more forthcoming about their problems; I am sorry to hear about it, but not really knowing what was going on made me kind of nervous after a while. They probably hope never to hear from me again! But they came through with a great job--I love it.

So, the upshot is, I would be happy to recommend them to anyone looking for gun leather.

That Lady Tequila rig is sweet. I read about it in the newsletter, and thought it sounded like a great idea.

Skye, that's totally awesome (as we said back in the day) that you have such a beautful style named after you. Very cool!

BayouBlessings, nice to meet you! I love your hat.

Great photos all, thanks for posting them!

(they have more participants at monthly matches than we have at our Nationals :scared)
