I don't know if this has been discussed, but how do you know what is period correct as far as clothing is concerned? If there is a book, thread or web-site you can direct me to I would appreciate it.

Bayou, one of the easiest things to do is get on Amazon.com and search for Victorian clothing. A ton will pop up and you can review the books. Start off with the fashion plate books. The ones with all the pictures of the different eras of dress. Paper doll books are good too. I have many and the ones from Tom Tierny are period correct. I'm sure other ladies will help you out too.:)

Look at all the pics posted of plates under the sewing forum!
This book is a staple! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0486229904/qid=1140656346/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-2579928-0667061?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 And cheap!
I have a few tierney doll books for under 3$ if you want them! I also have a book on period traditions etc i would be happy to send you!! www.trulyvictorian.netfirms.com is a killer site for costumes, patterns, info and more!!

Ohhh ladies for shame! We need to have Hugh post a sticky with must see site for beginners...

My all time favorite "show me site." is the Demode database "Real womens clothes"
http://demode.tweedlebop.com/realvict/

Then there is the the New York Library digital picture catalog, you choose Browse, scroll down to costume then pick the decade of choice from the country of preference (the French really knew their fashion!)
http://digital.nypl.org/mmpco/

Whitckar auction house has some of the most stunning clothing I have come across on the net a few times a year they publish their digital catalog...
http://whitakerauction.com/

There are so many good books, but most of the ones I can call to mind are "how to" sew types.... Truly Victorian is THE pattern company of coiuce for the bustle era, and Heather should have a Master's in the subject! The Ladies on her board are helpful and encouraging. The "Comments" section Dresses made with our patterns and Public photo gallery are all wonderful sources of inspiration.

We have more great places to look....but these will keep you busy for awhile!!:tban

BB, the first book that Fleur posted a link to is lovingly referred to by the Belles as "The Victorian Bible". I have been inspired by that book more than any!!! I remember when I made the aqua and tan dress, I was talking to Miss Tabitha and said, "Do you have Harper's Bazaar 1867-1898?" She replied, "You mean the bible, I have it right here." I then said turn to page 122." She knew exactly which dress I was referring to before she ever opened the book!! Here is page 122:

My hubby has been holdin' out on me!! He was straightening out his DVD collection and the top of his dresser and had set this big book on the bed as he organized. This BIG book is "The Peacemakers: Arms and Adventure in the American West." I said, "WHAT is this?!" I opened it and could not believe the fantastic pictures in this book. He then told me that it had a companion to it. I said, "WHAT?!? You been holdin' out on me!!" He then gave me "Steel Canvas: The Art of American Arms," another beautifully illustrated book!!

If you are interested in either of these books:

The Peacemakers (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0679404945/ref=sib_rdr_dp/104-9071930-9443946?%5Fencoding=UTF8&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&no=283155&st=books&n=283155)

Hi BB,
You have hit the target dead center by joining this site! And books, books, books are our finest references, beware! They are addicting! Almost on the level of chocolate, but we won't go there cause if we do too much we can't fit into our dresses/pants and then we have to order new gun belts! Wait till the FABRIC addiction hits, then you know yer in for the duration. Then come the patterns and your done for.....especially if you sew...:sk
I now have over 120 books on Victorian fashion and sewing, these don't include the etiquette, life style, architecture (I WILL have a Victorian house some day), morals and history books I collect. For me this is no longer an addiction but an obsession......a good obsession giving where I live and work.
People, tourists and reenactors sometimes ask the most interesting questions.
You are very fortunate to have the internet for this, when I started, there was no internet, hehe, hence all the books. Did I mention my Mom is a professional researcher and librarian?:jp :jp
You should see HER library!
