Since the rifle is a 44mag, and I will be shooting full black powder loads, and a shoot two .44 1858s with a full 30 grains, and a 12ga. with a square 3dram load of black powder, I guess that now makes me a full fledged wharthog. :gf

Thats funny Nellie...

My rifle is just "girl" as its a cowboy competition, i usually say its a "cowgirl" competition... But it also allows me to call her a B@tch when she decides to play up at times...Which is usually me going to fast and i short stroke it...

Congrats on your new rifle Makin....Have fun with the black powder..

I've seen the pigs fly on the TV!! Does that count, Nellie?
Clancy, I just noticed you rope now ... or have you always and I just didn't notice?
Macon, what took you so long to get the gun you always wanted?

MMS,
Good choice. That was my first SASS gun, bought mine 23 years ago. Have shot 1/2" groups at 100 yds with lead bullets. People think the "Micro-groove" barrels don't handle lead well, they are wrong! It don't like anything heaver that 240g though, tried 300g JHP and got 8" groups.
And it handles 44 special if I was so inclined. Tried some once and they feed just fine.

I always think of the "Police Airwing" when I hear that phrase .....

I were at an unrelated event and a police helicopter flew in real low....... some wagg yells "Pigs in Space"....... whole crowd cracked up :)

:Nellie, you crack me up.

Clancy, I also have a Marlin Cowgirl that messes up when I shortstroke.

None of my guns have official names. I do call one of my pistols "the old one." Another is "the NRA." After trying to shoot yesterday, the third is now "the broken one." I don't know why I tried to shoot her, she's always been "the spare."

Regards,

Allie

"Spares" need to be used too, that way you'll know that she'll work when needed.

I had to use my spare yesterday............ (broken hand spring in a Navy:o)

Hi :wallaby,

You are so right about that. She's always been the spare because she's such a Prima Donna, very tempermental and prone to breakage. (At least, that has been my opinion.) Maybe I'll name her Donna.

Come on, rotate them guns, shot everything.
Maybe Donna feels left out?
I make it a point to shoot every gun I have but one at least once every year. Don't want anybody to feel left out. Course my main SASS guns get the most use, but I still try to shoot everything.
Hummm, ain't shot the 44 mag super blackhawk lately. Reckon its next.

Well, I have come down with a really bad chest cold. There was a cowboy shoot today and I had to miss it. What is even worse is that I have owned my rifle for 53 hours, and I have not put one bullet through it. :(

Macon,
If you ain't agona shoot it, send it to me. 53 hours, wow, that would be a record for me. I've even shot some of mine befor I bought em.
Hope you get well quick and can put some lead downrange.
I'll probaly be sick from shooting in the cold, rain, snow, sleet and mud yesterday. But I had fun.

Nellie, me rope?... I have one at home and was starting to learn, but alas...thats about it!.:lasso

I have a spare set that i never take to the range, they are my old cattlemans, but they just sit in the safe now, waiting for my son to reach the age he can shoot. Good thing i didnt take them out on Sunday, we had reloads and i hate reloading with them things.. Open the gate, half cock, thats why i got rugers....They are faster to load!!

Ali, my rifle plays up if i cant her to one side slightly while im levering, she has to be upright to feed that first round.. Kinda sounds like a baby.. Sit them upright to feed them!....

I have been looking at guns - via the internet, and reading all I can about them - as I am getting ready to get started in finding what would work for me. I have found the Marlin comes highly recommended. I was wondering if the 44mg would be a bit much for a brand new shooter? Should I start with something smaller? Do the 1894 models come in smaller cartridges/mgs ?? Forgive me if I am not asking the right things, in the proper manner - for all I know the cartridge and mgs could be the same thing - or they could be totally different. I am trying to learn - and there are so many guns, calibers, cartridges, mg out there that it is a bit confusing for me right now.. Oh how I long to be an experienced shooter.. Someday - yes, Someday!!! :gf

Starr, Yes Marlins come in everything from 32 to 44mag, including the easy to reload calibers 0f 38, 357. Also 44-40(rare now days) and 45 colt.
At the velocity we are shooting it wont make much difference, but try and get a rifle in the same caliber as your pistols. Perhaps 38/357. Easy on the shooter, easy to reload, inexpensive caliber to shoot and plenty of guns around in those calibers. If you need help Call Gary at EMF at 1-800-430-1310, he can really help you on finding the right gun and who has it close to you, or even have it shipped directly to your dealer of choice. You make sure you tell him that you work with Dutch at HTCF. Their web site is:http://www.emf-company.com/ and Happy Trails to You!

Starr,
Don't be afraid of the 44. Chipmunk shoots mine and she is just over 110# or therebouts, maybe a little more since soccer started.
Course, 200g bullets with my load of Unique ani't nowhere near Magnum in the 44. Cowboy ammo is, mostly, loaded down to useable levels. Several ladies, including 2 of the Bells use 45 Colt pistols.
Chipmunk can shoot my 45s but prefers her 38s.
If you look a little, you can find almost any combo of gun/caliber. If you have questions, by all means ask.

Thank you guys for the tips.. The more I read the more I find myself leanin' towards a 38.. Great advise Kid on getting the same caliber in pistols and rifle.. I will know more once I get back from the Double R Bar meet on the 12th. Then, in April I have been invited to a Ladies Shoot day the Cajon Cowboys are holding.. This is a day when we come and shoot different guns to see what would be best. I am really looking forward to that meet..

That's it. Wait till after the ladies shoot. Try before you buy. 38s can be/are a touch cheaper to feed if you don't reload. Good range of bullet weights and styles, Round nose flat points and truncated cones usually feed well in rifles. If you don't understand the terms ask and someone will splain stuff to you.
Most important thing is the have fun. Get something you can enjoy.
I just like big stuff, 44s and 45s.

45's are expensive to feed even if you DO reload! :) In my humble opinion, go with the 38's...lots less expensive to feed, less recoil, less noise....

In Marlins there's two or three rifles/carbines to have in .38/.357. The 1894 CB and 1894 C/CS in the dual set up, and the just now discontinued CBC in .38 Spec. only. The CB can be had in 24" or 20" barrel length. The 24's are the older style, the 20's are current manufacture. The CBC's have 20" barrels. The 1894 C/CS models are carbines with 18 1/2" barrels that are round instead of octogon.Mag capacity is 10 .38's and 9 .357's, but can be increased by some judicious shortening of the mag spring. There is also an less expensive version sold by Big 5, these are the same mechanically, but have birch stocks instead of black walnut. All the versions of the 1894 share the same mechanicals, the only differences are barrel shape/length, or type of wood. I have at this time 4 of the 1894's and they all work great......Buck:cgun

I have come back to this thread to state that even though I bought my rifle on Feb. 17, I still have not been able to shoot one bullet through it. The only time I get to shoot is on the weekend. Well the first two weekends I had the rifle, I also had bronchitis. This past weekend, I had a wisdom tooth removed and really couldn't go out. But this coming weekend, it is supposed to be in the 70's here, you better believe I am going to shoot the heck out of my new gun. I have 100 rounds of Goex Black Dawg, and who knows, I may shoot all 100 rounds. It wasn't until last week that I was over my bronchitis enough to even clean the gun and get it ready to shoot black powder. My new gun is thinking that I have neglected it. This weekend I am going to ask for its forgiveness. Infact, I had to miss a cowboy shoot yesterday.

Macon,
You may already be beyond the forgivness period of the gun, these things vary depending on the individual toy.
Lucky for you she is American, not Italian, also being a 44 helps, she is more mature than if she where only 32 or 38.
If the new toy is past the forgivness phase of your relationship it will not perform well for you.
This could require serious work on your part. The old saying that "Hell hath no fury like a women scorned!" is seconded by inserting the word rifle for woman. Dangerous place to be, tread carefully.
May require new springs, one piece firing pin, tang site (think roses candy, night out on the town). Good luck and good shooting.

Oh, the tang sight is already in my thoughts. I will probably be able to order one around June. Hmmm...my anniversary is in June. Maybe my wife will buy me one. I may have to slip her some of my Vicodan to get her to buy it.

Hmmm, get wife to buy stuff as presents. Good and bad points. My wife is not a shooter and not interested. (trying to get her to the Bust Out). No knowledge of guns or gun stuff. Sometime she gets the right stuff, sometimes not.
Good luck.
