A VERY MERRY COWBOY CHRISTMAS

Have you ever noticed that some of the greatest ideas are hatched while sitting round the campfire, when the pressure of training or competing are off and there is nothing much left to do – other than dream of the next big CAS match?
That happened to the four of us… Trinity Hill SASS 47087, Miss Ruby Redsmoke, Payden Kash SASS L 28437 and Brandy Ann Kash. We had just returned from the NZ National and NZ SASS Regional Champs at Waiuku at the end of November and out next main match wasn’t until the Trans Tasman Duel Down Under at Cowboy Paradise in February 2006. We decided to hold an event for our club, the Golden Downs Rangers, which was purely for fun. With the next scheduled club day being the week prior to Christmas we decided to have a “fun and frivolous shoot with a festive theme”.
The jury is still out on which was the most fun – organising the event or shooting it!!!
As Christmas is in summer in New Zealand we decided to have just four stages, all to be shot before the day got too hot. Then we could adjourn to the club rooms for a shared lunch and spend the afternoon socialising and discussing the highlights of 2005, watching videos and generally relaxing.
The first course of fire involved retrieving each of three gifts from under a Christmas tree. Inside each gift was a token that outlined which gun must be fired, thus the shooter did not know the order of guns until the gifts were opened.
The second course of fire had the shooter start wearing a pair of oven gloves. You had to place a Christmas turkey into the oven before you could start shooting. Each shooter who knocked down the rifle targets received a candy cane.
Our third course of fire caused more frustration and hilarity than any of the others. The R/O was on one side of the jail window and the shooter on the other side. After the buzzer, the shooter and R/O pulled a Christmas cracker together then the shooter went on to fire their pistols and rifle. The shooter then had to move to the end of ‘Santa’s Sleigh’ where a Christmas stocking containing shotgun rounds was hanging. The shooter could retrieve one or two shotgun rounds at a time (depending on their shotgun type). Each of the rounds that they pulled from the stocking had to be used. The problem was that the stocking contained four black powder loads, four of the shooters own loads and four dummy practise loads. The shooter had to keep going until the four knock down plates had all fallen.
Our final course of fire used only the pistols and rifle. We had to transport the Christmas ham (a life sized pig archery target) in a wheelbarrow as we negotiated the stage. If the pistol targets were shot clean, the shooter received a shot glass to take back to the clubrooms to enjoy a ‘shot of Christmas spirit’ after the shooting was over.
As we enjoyed a fantastic pre-Christmas lunch (which actually lasted all afternoon) we watched a video of the morning’s shooting. Everyone agreed that Frock Holliday SASS #####, with her ‘cute’ running method, would make the best Christmas Elf.
Our Christmas shoot was definitely the highlight of the Rangers year, closely followed by our members’ outstanding results at the 1st NZ SASS Regional.
